For a few years i have had a small hammer that i made from a punchpress. It worked ok, but i really wanted a big power hammer. I had a friend that owed me some money, he paid me and i bought the mittler brothers kit, with the fabricated arms. A local farmer was s****ping a large spray rig and I got what i needed to build “big red”. I still need to install the motor, but I am well in my way.

Looks beefy, and I like that it was built (at least partially) out of old farm machinery cast-offs. I'd like to hear how this ends up working out. I've thought about building a small one just to try it, never used one before.

I’ll be following along too. I’ve also been thinking of building something like this. Just wondering if big red will be all blue.

Its beefy all right. Just the Part that i made weighs 800 lbs. with the arms and motor it should be about 1400 lbs of pure panel beating bliss. I cant wait.

"Ya gunna need a stronger floor". Sorry, the video in my head is of the hammer pounding away like a jackhammer and disappearing through the concrete. Nice work on the unit.

The concrete is 3 ft thick around the poles in a pole barn. I am also thinking that a high density rubber matt might be in order. Any thoughts on this?

Should i bolt it down through the rubber, or instead of the rubber?

I’d guess you are trying to keep the concrete from cracking, maybe check McMaster Carr for industrial machine mounts?

I'd think you could rubber gasket and bolt it down. You could probably drill right through the base then drill for a standard size plug for this app...use a floor bolt and thick metal washer...

Other may have better ideas...for something that could topple...thinking out loud some machines are free wheel with locks...that shape metal...pickolo, wheels but their smaller and frames are different...Cody Walls, Tuck, Hitchhiker, Marty Strode these guys would have a good opinion...I worked in industry for years...most of the time stuff is secured...
my drill press at home isn't...different animal though..

Its really not that loud. I would say it is quieter than an air chisel, and it doesn't bounce around at all. It is super heavy, I am sure that this helps. Next comes tooling. I ordered the 6”,12”, and 24” radius dies, as well as a shrinking die. I want to build an Ed Roth style car, but with a very round metal top, instead of a bubble. My reason for this is that I want it to be a real driver. i have a question for any power hammer guys. Do i need a stretcher die, or can i get by with what i have?
