Thanks - what was old is new again

  4. That is a great series which actually runs thru to the July issue. I have scanned the entire '49 so I can post them on this thread if you like.

  5. Nice story Ryan. My key learnings are:

    1. Talk a little and listen a lot to the old guys, they've got the experience
    2. Ask for their opinions and reasons for doing things their way
    3. Be grateful for their help and let them know
    4. The quickest and cheapest option probably has the greatest risk of failing
    5. Make your own mind up what you want to do by thinking over all options
    6. Tell the person if their advice worked for you and remember them
    7. If a person's advice didn't work for you don't blame them - they gave it probably for free and without guarantees
    8. There is no total failure - at least you gained experience and hopefully enjoyed it and your own personal knowledge increased

So, I take books and article like this as well as the HAMB as a great source of knowledge but in the end it's the bloke in the shed who has to do the job. ;)

  6. very good!
    true story:
when i was real young i was introduced to a fellow who every body said was a very wise and knowledgable person. a genius. i asked him for advice, or maybe he just offered it, it was a long time ago and i can't remember, but i do remember what he said.
"sonny, keep your mind full and your bowels empty"
older i get the more it makes sense.

Once you read that...move on to May and June 1954 for an actual technical article on building an A-V8...
It covers ground similar to the Great Book, though in a truncated form and with rather grainy photos.
As an aside...the roadster built for the aricle survives, and was located by Rodder's Digest a couple of years ago.

  9. @firerod the articles starting with...

  12. There are ongoing tech articles on carburettor tuning, ignition, Column shifts, modifying carbs for Fuel, then into the different engine choices. I can post them as well if there is interest.

I think something like that would work pretty well today if you could keep the cost down. I'd like some too. Might be a good project for somebody.
