I am going to look it up when I get home but right now I'm just on my phone. I know HP tv probably has done a budget build on one
You were asking about a 400 sbc? the stock blocks are hard to find in rebuildable condition, and the stock 400 rods are weak. Actually, if I were building a sbc of any kind, I would be sure to have the block and heads magnafluxed. We have a lot of sbc blocks come through the shop, and about 1 in 4 has a crack in it, usually in the lifter valley, or near a freeze plug or drain plug. As for the heads, check the casting # under the valve cover and check the last 3 numbers. If it's an 882 or a 624, at least 1 of the heads is cracked. We don't get as many Fords or Chryslers in, but I have only seen 1 cracked Ford head (87 Windsor smog head) and a couple of cracked 360 chrysler heads. If this isnt going in a car, and you just want to build it and sell it, they put 302's in EVERYTHING so I think you could sell it fairly easy. As for the Nailhead, parts are a bit pricy for those, so not making that your first attempt is probably a good idea, if you screw up a 302, no big deal, just go get another one. P.S. My 302 gets my Roadster to 12.7@105 and 18 mpg......just a thought.
A 351w sounds like a fun engine to learn and play on. Has anyone seen a budget build thread anywhere?
