Hot Rods Building my first roadster in Kansas City

  1. I’ve got the repro KR puller like the one shown from Mac’s and it has served me well.

Years back, I bit the bullet and bought the Vintage Precision unit after missing out on a few KR Wilson units on eBay. Spendy, but worth the money in my opinion. Never had an issue pulling a rear hub. I did end up finding a KR Wilson (ABV-156 is the model you want), but I like the Vintage Precision one more.

Well, now you have me thinking what puller I used on mine.....something I already had or if I bought one of the dedicated ones. I'll have to look.

So glad you guys were able to come by! Sorry about the having to dig the A out and the shop tornado. LOL

'34 looks mean! It is good that parts found homes on so many projects.

Couple of dawn dish soap baths and I popped the seals and bearings out and dunked them into the acid bath.
IMG_1400.jpeg IMG_1401.jpeg IMG_1402.jpeg Everything under the grease has looked great. I’m always happier with greasy parts over really rusty ones. There’s still some grease and gunk here and there especially in the grease cups but after the acid bath I should be able to see what’s left to clean a lot better. Might take a trip to a heated power washer for some of this stubborn stuff.

Either way the front end of this chassis should roll when it all goes together now :)

I'm so glad that you all can and are using those parts. ALSO that it's no longer in my way.

Do you guys have new brake shoes for that? There's a guy in Jefferson City that relines those if you need it. I'm betting that there a dozen places in KC that can do it though.

Good to know! I’m not 100% sure if I have shoes on the shelf or not I’ll have to check :)

Tim, When you get the '46 back on the road maybe you could pick up some extra project money like this.

    No kidding! Lol

I have driven the car a little bit mostly life getting in the way. Hopefully get it on stands and give it a good look over and put it into errand running rotation

That chest of drawers is built to fit that trunk. The curve of the sides and slanted drawer fronts are a fit. I'd like to see it with the drawers closed.

Checked on it last night IMG_1427.jpeg pretty nasty! I think the color is coming from all the grease. The drums/hubs are looking really
Good and the backing plates are getting there. I think it’s all gonna have a date with a heated power washer with de greaser and then back into a fresh acid bath. But still feeling good about how they lol.

    @Tim,

Whatcha got in the tub? The liquid that is? You mention acid. Is that it? That's certainly not the acid I remember from the 60's.

Citric acid doesn't clean grease much. I don't know why the citric hand cleaner works. But the acid bath is great on rust.

Yeah it’s citric acid. I know it won’t get rid of the grease but I figured it would let me see what I am working on a little clearer

It turns dark from †he rust but it still works. It is good to let it st for a while and brush & rinse it. Put it back in there is still rust. It will eventually get it all.

Yeah I’ve used this trick a bunch of times :)
IMG_1438.jpeg It’s looking groooooss but the backing plates are showing black paint across most the outside and the drums look like they were painted black at one point as well. Thankfully the acid is getting the rust under the paint and when the paint skiffs off the greasy mess stuck to it is going with it!

Alright! Time to finish this up for now. IMG_1475.jpeg solid black murk! IMG_1476.jpeg rinsed, towel dried and set in the sun IMG_1477.jpeg inside and in front of a fan

need some grease removed yet but good enough to sit on the shelf til I need them. I’ll get a rag and wipe out the old grease in the hubs and rub some
New grease on it to keep the races and etc good

got some grooves in the drums but seems to my un educated eye like enough meat to lathe it down

They cleaned up pretty well. If you just put on new shoes and leave the grooves when †hey wear in they'll have more surface contact.

I’ve got a buddy with a brake lathe but I guess that works too! Never would have thought about that

They may wear quicker and one side may have more surface than the other so it may pull to one side but you can handle that with a bigger steering wheel.

Not to much of an update. I’ve been messing with the 46 chassing down some issues and trying to figure out and adjust to my new “kids in school” schedule. But I did meet up with Austin today and get some roller 750’s that will let both the roadster and A have the right height tires mocked up once I swap wheels into them.

also traded him steering wheels. Now I’ve got a 40’ to put on the roadster and he’s got the 41-8 wheel for the horn ring he had for the Kay’s coupe. :)I’ve got parts in the mail once they show up and I clean up a few things I should be able to mock this back into a rolling steering frame. Well, almost I’m still short a pitman arm. But not like I’m going anywhere right now lol. IMG_1557.jpeg

Oh! And the nice steering wheel trim that goes on the arms that was on the 41 from Atch made it
To the better wheel for Austin’s coupe :)

Ordered the hub puller from Snyder’s this morning and should see it in the next few days. Got some parts that are supposed to show up for this project today as well.

Been trying to button up the transmission and wishbone mount for the A before I get to heavy back into this but when that’s done I’ll mock
    Up the roadster chassis :)

IMG_1622.jpeg Spindles, king pins and swedge bolts ready to go!

some front spring hangers and a pitman arm and I could have a rolling steering chassis! I’m planning on mocking it all back up next week. Is that I’ve got the space back.

I know I’ll change a bunch but there’s just something exciting about walking out and seeing the pile of parts look like something. I need to get these excelsiors swapped onto some wheels as all.

Maybe I’ll make a time lapse video of my putting it all together like legos :)

I have started making the pile of parts look more like a chassis again but I’m trying to focus on the A right now while I’m in the mood with good momentum.

But I just pulled the banjo from the A and this cleaned up/ worked over T spring will go on the roadster chassis so figured I’d add a teeny update. IMG_1917.jpeg IMG_1918.jpeg IMG_1915.jpeg need to sell the nice A banjo banjo and get it out of the way now lol
