Check the items removed and check the timing gears. Look for chunks that could have jammed it up. When you install the starter, check engagement carefully.
Glad to hear the "bad" engine may well be okay.
All the cool kids have a regular street engine and a 'Friday night special" engine, for those late night grudge runs. Make sure to include a bunch of ease of swap parts so it's quick work to prep the car!
Bellhousing bolts just long enough, quick drains for coolant, easy swap wiring, matched linkage and feed lines, complete 'bullets' to change over.;)

Or work out a swap for another A body to keep version 1.5 together.
    Example from here
    https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/1931-model-a-roadster.1269571/
which seems a bit much considering
    https://www.mikes-afordable.com/product/AF100B.html
but that's not Henry steel... don't mean to call out a member posting an ad.
I bet with the contacts you have another body could be found and a engine/body trade worked out, especially if you can drop it into your roller and prove operation.

I like where your head's at, Dennis! I've recently gotten into designing and printing vintage letterhead for extra effect.

Saving the best for page 100!

Thank you, Rocky. Right back atchy! Even when progress is slow, I'm keeping my eye on the prize.

Glad to have you on our side!

Thanks, Nick! That's an interesting hypothesis. I'll check it out tonight and see if I can glean more info.

Thank you. I'm doing everything in my power to keep this thread positive.

    So true!

Thank you! I agree. This isn't the easiest hobby to be in, so it's extra important to stick together.

Hahahah might have to take you up on that one!

Hahaha I'm going to have to print that one out and hang it in the garage.

    Brute force!

I like the way you're thinking. I'm regularly searching for a second body. Gotta love some interchangeability.

On Friday, David and I went over our options. We decided that the best plan is to have me clean up and button up the red engine this week. If the weather cooperates, I'll paint it too.

In other news, I recently received a gift from @62pan in the mail. I'm planning to shoot more film this year, and he generously sent me some vintage Fujicolor. 000081770016-1.jpg
As you may recall, I've had a lot of fun capturing hot rods on expired film in the past.

WSJ had a piece on the resurrection of point and shoot digital cameras. Charged the battery on my Sony and found pix of cars I forgot I even had on the card! Even got my HP portable snap shot printer up and running.

101 sounds more like a highway you should be driving than a page number in a hot rod build thread. But you are getting there.
Can you see the snow on Mount Diablo? We cut school to play in the snow up there in '61 or '62. They sent the poor old Driver's Ed teacher after us.

There's snow on lots of the hills around the bay area. Tam, Diablo, St. Helena...it's been crazy weather this month. Haven't seen snow this low in about 20 years.

I am from Canada where we get a lot of snow. In the mid 80s I used to go down to Blackhawk at the base of Diablo south of Walnut Creek to visit long time friends. One year we had a New years eve party and it snowed. Most there had never been in a snowball fight. The next day we went up Diablo and there was a lot of snow.

I remember having a snow ball fight in the quad at Clayton Valley High School in Concord/Clayton. Well more of a slush lump fight. That if when we cut school to go up in Diablo. I had to go home first and take the slicks off of my '38 coupe.

My future wife, a 5th generation Concord resident, had never seen a "real" snow fall. We were in Yosemite Valley in '66 and it started to snow a little so I took her up on Badger Pass where it was really coming down. We watched it a while then beat it out od there with the storm chasing my Morris Minor Traveler back to the valley. Looking out the window today she is much less impressed especially since we just barely made it home a few minutes ago without chaining up her Trail Rated 2014 Grand Cherokee with bad ass tires.

    I've always loved this photo.

No weather report here, but I do have a much-needed update.

On Saturday, I made my way up to my favorite place: David's shop in Petaluma. It was sunny in the city, but by the time I reached the North Bay, the rain began to fall. That didn't slow us down.

For my first—and most important—order of business, I did the ol' flathead switcharoo.
    IMG_2371.jpg
Note the white pan: a sign of things to come.
    IMG_2377.jpg
After lunch, the sun came out. I rolled the engine out into the driveway and pulled the pressure plate, clutch and flywheel.
    IMG_2378-1.jpg
Upon closer inspection, we concluded that the entire setup had seen better days. We weighed our options and, after a little bit of research, I ordered a fresh 11-inch clutch and pressure plate from Mac Van Pelt. We'll get the flywheel resurfaced before reassembly.
    IMG_2387.jpg
Next, I scraped the carbon off the pistons, valves and block. For my homework, I'll do the same to the heads.

After a busy month of travel, it felt so good to be back at the shop with David. We had a great time catching up on projects both big and small. Next time I'm there, we'll re-install the heads, the pan and—if the weather cooperates—spray some paint.

  14. Joey, as far as the person that you got the engine from, my father always said "all you ever have is your reputation". Put that person on your "Shit list". You are a good man for not mentioning his name, but I hope that word gets around. There are other people out there who could get the short end of the stick, too. As others have said "Karma" will catch up to him.

Didn’t realize Harbor Freight sold “Ford” hammers! Are they all the same, or is there a special one just for Flatheads?

it's not the size of the hammer so much...it's knowing where to hit it
or that's what the hit and miss engine guys say

Acetone on a shop rag works great to dissolve the carbon buildup on the pistons. It saves a lot of scraping and chipping! Wear solvent proof gloves and have plenty of ventilation...

Good point. I read a copy of some book. Said to write down a name of someone who didn’t treat you well. Burn the paper and forget about it.
Damn near filled up the barrel, but felt better when done:)

Okay, off the holistic stuff, let me see what Joey has planned!

Painting both flatheads red reminds me of a Lincoln St. (Grandma's house/my garage) story.
My bud Al Mise had just gotten out of the Navy, and we were fast into flatheads for his channeled '30 'A' coupe and my '30 'A' Cabriolet.
Painting two engines, the fresh one for Al's coupe and the shot one (wrist pin through the block)
Al was bright eyed and bushy tailed, Yep. Finished the bad engine, swung it into the coupe...
Wouldn't start w/starter, so a good push...Started, but Wow! Made more noise than a jackass in a tin barn.
WHOOOPS! Al smiled that sheepish one, we all laughed and pushed it back up the long driveway.

    Sidebar 2.023: Change

When I returned from my trip across the pond in mid-March, David called to let me know that the building where his shop is housed was under new ownership. And with new ownership, change was in the air. Long story short, my car could no longer be there. I was heartbroken. David did everything in his power to change their mind, which means the world to me. They wouldn't budge. I knew I needed to act quickly.

From there, I called Yama and we talked through a plan of attack. We decided the best thing to do would be to rent a garage here in the city to house Version 1.5, and then bring 2.0 back to Loyola Terrace. This was Friday. By Sunday, I had signed my lease for the new space in the Outer Richmond.
    IMG_3017.jpg
First, I parked the car. Then, I hoisted in the second flathead. IMG_3117.jpg The following Saturday, David and I wound things down in Petaluma.
    IMG_3134.jpg
Although much of the day was focused on moving, we had a great time finishing up the torque tube.
    IMG_3137.jpg
Note the "Royal Standard" artwork by my talented friend @41 GMC K-18. (More about the backstory in an upcoming post). IMG_3138.jpg
When afternoon turned to evening, we cleaned up, packed up and said, "See ya later."
    IMG_3142.jpg
As the shop grew smaller in the rear view mirror, there was an unmistakable sense of melancholy. For a year and a half, I dreamt of driving this car back to Loyola Terrace. I wanted it to work out so badly—maybe even too much. But as I racked up miles, the bigger picture came into focus.

We started with a single Model A rear crossmember and we turned it into a chassis. These old Ford parts fought us every step of the way, but we persisted. I'm grateful for David taking the time to show me the ropes. Fabrication, mechanical work, Petaluma history, Western yodeling—everything. "We didn't just build a car," he said as the sun began to set, "We built a friendship."

I haven't been posting on this thread for a couple of reasons. 1) Life has been crazy busy. Between my day job, my freelance jobs, travel and everything else, I haven't been able to sit down and catch up. 2) I've been focusing more on wrenching and less on posting. I was actually planning not to post until the engine was in the chassis—and running—but I figured that would take away some of the fun.

With 2.0 at my house, I've been able to make a lot of progress either before work or at night. Here's what I've accomplished thus far.
    IMG_3151.jpg
    Chassis in garage.
    IMG_3281.jpg
Flywheel resurfaced and re-installed with correct safety wire and Loc-tite.
    IMG_3291.jpg
11-inch truck clutch from Mac Van Pelt. Next came the new pressure plate.
    IMG_3292.jpg
Fresh white paint, chrome acorns and a little mock up.
    IMG_3175.jpg
As of yesterday, the engine is fully buttoned up and everything is torqued to spec. When I get some time (maybe this week, maybe early next), I'm going to put the engine back in and try to fire it up.

  30. When you told me the bad news a few weeks back, I was concerned for ya. But I knew you'd pick up the pieces and figure everything out. I'm glad to see some progress as well. I've got a few of those special @41_gmc_k18 drawings hanging in the shop also.
