Projects built lots of cars, but never a 32 roadster...

Scott, what ratio are you running. I started with a 3.73 but the revs were quite hi on the highway. Went to a 3.25 and it's better but I wonder if a 3.0 would work? I can go from 1st into 4th and the car just pulls away. Still has plenty of snap with the 3.25 so I'll probably leave it alone. Get around 15 mpg around town with SBC. Just my $.02.

3.50... with tires this tall, that should cut some of the gear ratio out

SEC trim black rattle can, $25 each, is worth every penny when it gets down to small parts

Great paint, yes, the price has gone up a bit, a couple years back it was on backorder, worth the wait.
This replaced my old standby as chassis black when Krylon changed their formulation.

Really enjoying your build thread. Three years(ish) from getting your frame back til you’re ready to start final assembly is pretty dang quick for a project like this…especially compared to other projects I’ve seen here on the HAMB. :p
    Kudos.

  7. Looking good. Fun time now assembling everything.

I got the rolling chassis back in December of 2020. Didn't start working on it until June of 2021, when I picked the body up at the NSRA show in PA.
Thanks for the encouragement, I planned to drive it this summer, but paint took much longer than expected and life got in the way (have 3 small kids). It is all working out though, as a fellow builder says, I've had time to "fluff everything" and have focused on the details while the paintwork was happening. I'm super stoked to not have any more dirt, rust or grime to deal with - will be like putting together a big kit.

    Clean, buff, bolt on, repeat.
    Hopefully for good this time...

Took tomorrow and the week between Christmas and New Years off. In-laws will be here, so I'll be out in the garage getting this thing mostly assembled

Was the brown paint in post 227 just a primer or was black the color from the start?
    Happy Holidays by the way!!

Planned it this way - frame suspension gas tank headlights tail lights and grill shell are all single stage gloss black... The body is a custom mixed color to look like old school red oxide primer base (which is more brown than current primers), covered with a sand clear coat

Had a great day with my 12-year-old son today. We put most of the front end together...

I introduced him to Never-dull, just like my grandfather did when I was his age. He was totally amazed at how bright it makes the chrome.

    Scott,
That color combination should be a nice contrast.
All your gloss black parts are the same on my car except my body and grill shell are matte black.

Straighten out the lower shock mounts before you put the torque to the perch nut. That's always a detail that's nice.

    Thanks - I will.
Nothing is tight yet, I want to set it on the ground first.

    Scott,
I saw in another topic you were looking into an Auburn dash panel. Did you ever decide on one?
    Regards,

Nice, but not an Auburn. It might look better with the wings on top?

Sure, you could do it that way. A local builder installed one "upside down" before I told him they are designed to be installed wings down.

Was able to accomplish the impossible today with some help from 3D printing and 2 heavy guys. Assemble a rear suspension with a 1200 lb. Posies rear spring ON the chassis (without disassembling the spring itself).
We put jack stands under the spring eyes and I sat on one rear frame rail and my buddy sat on the other to compress it enough to get the shackles in.
I 3D printed these little tapered slave/guides so that the misaligned shackles went in easy without pushing the back side bushing out.
Worked great without a big deal.

  29. Just curious, how long did the 3D thing take? And could you measure the distance between your rear spring hangars?

I ended up getting one of these from a fellow HAMBer. I can't remember his name off hand - but if you search through my old posts you'll be able to find it. The quality is excellent and I didn't have to do any modification to the dash besides cut a hole.
