What is the throat depth on that thing? Is it deep enough to do all you want to do. Just curious, been planning to build one myself, yours has inspired me to get busy.

  7. The depth is 36" but that is not the limit because I built it so the dies can be installed in 4 different directions so the capacity is alot more than 36".

Awsome!!! What diameter ram is it running? What sort of line pressure?

I'm a tool maker, but I've got no idea what tonnage would be needed to do the job.

Yep, that is the shit!! I would be punchin' louvers through stuff that should never be louvered, I'd be louver freakin' crazy! I would size up everything I see by whether or not I could punch me a louver in it!!.....Dang this is an old thread, so you're probably well past this stage of excitement by now.

very cool, and great way to recycle an old machine into something new and useful.
probably could do way more with it than just punch louvers.

will you be offering pre louvered panels?
I may want to have the rear panel below the rear window on my tudor done

probably cost too much to have it shipped

    Nice lines too Skratch

  16. Stuff the louver press Kev, I wanna scope out that killer garage of yours !!!

All those killer vintage longboards hanging from the rafters WOW!!

Sano work on the press too !!

  22. attitude.....This is a pretty old thread now, the flamed panel is bead rolled. If you haven't seen it already there is a thread called custom bead rolling ....lotsa pics that has alot of pics. Search for bead rolling and you will find it.

LIFESTYLZ.... Don't know how many but it has been used steadily for 2 1/2 years now with no problems. That's Lucky Burton with the trunk panel for his A coupe.

    Kev,

Do you know what the pressure output on that pump is? I am in the process of putting together a lowbuck setup for louvers and a set of flair punches and am not sure how much of a hydraulic system I need. Any constructive help is apprecdiated.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  25. I don't know any details on the pump, it is a 12v pump from a truck liftgate. The ram is 11" long x 3" ID with 1 1/8" shaft. I have seen a louver press with a Chevy power steering pump set up with an electric motor turning it.

You don't need much preessure at the die. I just did some louvers in a big bench vise and did not need to overtighten the vice. the metal was 19ga

I have calculated that to punch a 4" louver in 20 ga metal it would take just under 6,000 lb of force at the die. This assumes a non progressive cuttingh edge of 3.25 inches since the full width of the louver would not be sheared all at once and an ultimate strength of 60,000psi for typical steel.

The reason I am concerned is because I picked up a set of the Mittler Bros louver dies and press kit minus the pump. I am trying to stay as low buck as possible but Mittler Bros wants to sell me a 10,000 psi pump. The problem is that the hyd cyl on my setup is much smaller that on Kevs.

Anyway, by my calcs I do not need 10,000 psi but more like 3,000. Thats why I ask what Kevs 12v unit was putting out.
