Took a pile of steel, ended up with something that looks like a car! Still a long way to go, but it's a start. (just couldn't wait for the "what did you do this weekend thread") I used Paul's "how to build a ch***is" thread as my main motivation. Thanks Paul!
Holy Kick-up..... That cowl looks great. Do you currently have sheetmetal for it or are you forming that as well?
About 50/50. I'm using some of the sheetmetal off of my 47 IH. Doors, some of the firewall, some of the floor, and the cowl vent. The rest of the truck is pretty rusty, but I'll use whatever I can off of it to make compound curves, etc.
The cowl has a nice form. Why'd you paint already, though..? It looks like you still have alot of welding to do. JOE
It's very humid here. I live in a valley and we get tons of moisture. Any fresh steel will start to rust in a day or so. Started on the windshield posts last night. Started by pie-cutting and laying back the front edge. Then did the same for the outside edge. I still need to figure something out for the top of the post for a hinge, but I got a couple ideas.
Got a little more done this weekend. Used some 1x2 11ga. to make a perimiter for the top edge and 1x1 14ga. for the rest of the framework. Just have to build a framework for the floor now. Disregard the milk crate, that's just so I can sit in it and go "vroom, vroom".
Look's great, and shapely too! Tip for whom ever: DP 90 Epoxy prime, then wipe any area that need's weld w/ laq. rag. Si? Oui!
Thank you! Right now, just rattle can primer. If I'm gonna wipe it away, cheap stuff will do just fine. And... An update... Some fine folks have been asking how I plan to skin this pig. What I'm doing is usning .5x.5 16ga. tubing welded up next to the 1x1. First picture shows what I'm talking about. That leaves me a nice .25" shelf on each side to weld the 18ga sheetmetal to. (from the inside). A nice layer of dynamat in between the sections, then another layer of 18ga sheetmetal on the inside for an inside panel. (maybe beadrolled.)
Every hotrodder has a milk crate for VROOOMING. Some hide them behind the door or under the bench but those who are sure of their manhood have 'em sitting right out in the open, sometimes even 2.
I got the better half to sit in it, but she wouldn't VROOM. She also wouldn't wait for me to get a second crate. She did like it though. Now I have to put in an automatic just so she can drive it too. ( I was gonna do it anyway, but I scored some brownie points by telling her I would!)
Dang I must reak of manhood....I've got four small ones and one BIG one....and they are all out in the open....and I make vrooming noises too....as well as my wife....sometimes we do it together... in the dark, with flashlights thats to simulate night driving your dirty minded *******s Sweet start, I as well will be following this as we are getting ready to frame up a roadster in steel....
Sorry for the ****py phone pictures, I'll get better one's this weekend. Got my donor vehicle last Sunday for the amazing price of $58.30 (for the tow truck charge.) 79 C-10 250 2bbl with a TH350 9" tailshaft. It's the Integral head engine, which sux, but it runs great, shifts great, and it has only 79k on it in 29 years. I know cuz it was my brothers' truck, and I've done ALL of the maintenence on it because my brother is mechanically retarded. Had a shot wheel bearing which caused him to give it to me. All I'm using are the eng/trans and the manual brake pedal ***embly. The engine has factory dual exhaust, Not split, but still dual outlets, so that'll be fun. Motor runs like a champ, trans is strong, price was right! Plus I did some skinning on the body! Used 18ga sheet for most of it. Used the 49 IHC cowl vent and firewall. Still got lots to do, but getting there slowly. Today's temperature was 39 degrees. Not a lot getting done on cold *** days like this. Ask questions. I like to feel popular!
...You'll like that 250 six with the factory dual exhaust manifold; even tho it's not a true split, it will sound real good with a set of gl***packs. I ran that setup on my 81 Chevy pickup and it was fun. ...You're doin some nice work on your project, keep us posted.
this thing is awesome! i thought it was cool when ya had just the cowl! hahaha looking good man, keep us posted!
Thanks for the replies you guys, that makes me feel good. I'm super-stoked about the whole project and can't wait to work on it when I get home at night. On a related note, does anyone know of any chrome or aluminum goodies for this engine? Specifically valve cover, side covers, and oil pan. Also hop-up parts would be good. I want it sporty, but reliable, so a full race cam is out of the question. This whole thing with me will probably weigh only 2,000 lbs. Also thinking about a shift kit for the 350 ******. Speaking of the ******, does anyone know of an easy way to flush it while I have it out of the vehicle? I thought of "Kooler Klean" sold at the parts store, but I'm not sure if you can actually run it through the trans.
Some progress pix. Been busy skinning the body, and finishing the frame. Did some mock-up tonight and took a couple photos. Question for the m***es. I don't have enough room to run the master cylinder under the floor inside the rails. Has anyone run them outside the rails? Thoughts? Also looking for suggestions on motor mounts. I included a couple pix to show what I'm working with.
http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/buggy/tcbh/buggytcbh2.htm Check out this site, its from a thread tonight, I'm doing a scratch built too. like the look of these, and I think they will solve my issues. gonna put them right on the floor in plain site, think it will be a cool look
It's a cool part, but I don't have that much room. You can kinda tell from this picture. I'll post a better one tonight.
Had the same problem trying to fit my master cylinder on my pickup, the only place for it was on the firewall. hated to do it but the only place it would fit.
I put my whole power brake set up on outside of the frame rail on a homemade bracket, been working fine for a year now.I'll try to get a pic tonight after work. Later Rob
