Just checked out a listing for a guy on ebay who's selling off a bunch of reground cams he got from cal cams back in the day. He's got about 100 cams and has some rare stuff and is auctioning off everything at $19. Thought someone here could find something good. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/49-5...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3a58ae5741
I saw this too but was wondering if Cal-Cams had a good reputation. I had an uncle in the auto parts business back in that time frame and I never remember him stocking any reground cams since it wasn't a lot more money for a new cam. If the regrinder had a good rep and reprofiled them as OEM specified, they should be OK to run. If not, all bets are off.
I just want to clarify that it looks like that cam ALONE is being sold for $19, not the whole lot of cams. At least that's what I got from reading the description.
Reground cams are all OK as long as when they were reground they were put in a hot oil tank and had the fresh profiles treated to absorb some oil. We still get cams reground down under and the guy we use is spot on - he will never ever take it off the machine and give it straight to you - it has to go into his tank and be treated - the cam profile s/be a dark grey colour showing that it has been treated - shiny = no good
The price is right, but, the vendor admits he does not have any specs... If you want to gamble $19 or what ever it climbs to, go for it. But until you have it your hands and can run it through a CamDoctor you have no clue what you are buying. If you want a regrind you are best served by someone (like us) who can provide the profile you want and back it up with a warranty. .
