Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Flat Rod, Sep 21, 2004.

  1. Anyone here chop a late 40s early 50s plymouth/dodge business coupe? What did it look like when you were done (pix would be nice)? and How did you do it?

    Thanx

A guy here had a fully customized 48 Plymouth but it was still ugly.

  3. ONce upon a time, before this board was even thought of, our own Cole and his buddy's, "The Salinas Boys" were chopping everything they could get their hands on. One of the Salinas Boys sliced the top on his 49-50 Plymouth bidness coupe and it was one of the cars featured in R&C [I think}...showed some details of the chop and the inside of the chopped top with all it's welds....very nice! I'm sure someone else here has an issue date...
    It looked impressive, IMHO

do a search for the Ramchargers, they did a chopped hemi powered drag car with one of the first experimental tunnel ram setups.

the High and Mighty was a.. '48 or '49 Dodge/Plymouth Business Coupe.. [IMG]

My dad and I chopped his 51 Plym business coupe. I don't have photos with me here at work, but I'll try to post some tonite.

I will say that this was one of the easiest chops we have ever done together (out of a half dozen or so). With just the 2 of us working on it, we had it all tacked back together and partly finish welded in a long weekend (maybe Memorial Day or Labor Day?). This includes the doors and interior window garnishes and all!

I'll warn you though, Dad did the late-model Mercedes lights on the front of his car. You can pretend they are 39 Ford headlights to keep it traditional, OK?

I've put a ton of thought into it, but haven't picked up the sawzall yet. I think to make it look right the top needs to be split in half and lengthened. The front half moves forward to line up the a pillars and the back half goes straight down. Does that make any sense? I know that's not the best/easiest way to chop a car, but I think it's what needs to be done on this particular car. (I have 2 spare roofs to use for my chop, btw.)

On Dad's car, we leaned the a-pillars back just a tad, and laid the rear window down to allow the roof to move forward to meet the windshield opening. This doesn't work on all cars, but it gave this one a much sleeker profile IMO.

Hands down the ugliest drag car I have ever seen. [IMG] It looks like something out of Mad Max.

Not a very good picture but you get the idea.

Here is my Dad's car I mentioned earlier. I see yer in Virginia, so if you are plannin' to go to Goodguys Charlotte, you can probably find the car there. I'm sure Dad would be glad to give you more details in person [IMG], or you can PM me for his phone number.
