Very cool! I've seen several internet arguments about that one, it really looks like it could have been factory made. My first rod was an M series. Here is one like the item on Ebay. (slightly different year) and one rodded.
I spoke with the owner and he had several photos of the same cab on other trucks . I may see him again this fall . He lives in Az.
This one was listed today on EBAY (39 Chevy COE). http://www.ebay.com/itm/1939-Chevro...ash=item2a7d2c4d78:g:IEUAAOSwWxNYx2Ic&vxp=mtr
9500 seems kinda steep for what appears to be a non-running, dented and rusted COE, doesn't it? Or do early Chevys command these numbers?
39 was the first year for Chevy and they do bring more as the body style was only for two years, 39/40 and some of the parts are those years only. I looked for over 5 years before I found my 39, it was in Knoxville TN but came out of S CA. from an orchard.
Here is another 39 for sale in FL. I looked for nearly 4 years for one before I found a decent truck and now it seems there are more survivors than what I thought. This one is $7900 or best offer. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1939-Chevro...ash=item3f77a7ab5d:g:fyIAAOSwOddYyKtY&vxp=mtr
I'm looking for a Mustang manual steering box and pitman arm.....'67-'72 I think? In good usable condition. Cougar box from those years might be the same. Anybody have one laying around?
The biggest problem in finding a 39/40 Chevy COE is getting one with a decent grill, or at least fixable grill. Every bar in the grill is different. Different length & bowed different. It's usually the bottom ones that are crunched, some times wasted beyond repair. I have only seen two good grills for sale in the seven years I've had my 39, & they were not cheep. Normally no one will sell any front-end parts, fenders/hood/grill. So get the best cab you can find. I looked for over two years to find my 1939 project, & with no ***le. I bought it sight unseen, & had it shipped over half way across the US to get it home. That was 7 years ago & I finely just found a local state 1939 COE ***le for it just last month. Now I feel better about all the cash I'm spending on it, LOL... Reason for waiting for a 1939 Oregon COE ***le, way to many suspension modifications & smog restrictions. I don't want it inspected by the state, LOL... Also, It would had been a wast of time wanting Chevy's first COE & having it ***les as something else.
Yes the grille is a tough piece, I have seen an upper tie bar (Chevrolet Script) and the hood ornament for sale recently but NO GRILLE. Luckily my 39 has a decent grille and all the other parts are good also, still missing a radiator cap, but have plenty of time for that later.
That 1946 COE looks like a good project, but it's not a COE any more, with the motor put behind the cab. Just my opinion.
Old School there is truth in "That 1946 COE looks like a good project, but it's not a COE any more, with the motor put behind the cab." which I have never considered prior to reading your words. Ironic truth. This advertised unit is not mine, simply a regional ad that I thought I would share with HAMB crowd. Perhaps a decent deal depending upon bidding for our American friends with the current USD-CDN exchange rates? If someone stateside does decide to purchase it I can recommend a hauler and ***ist with border export info. I will be planting my C.O.E. engine in the original space; recently purchased a performance enhanced flathead V8 as it mirrored my personal intentions for a flattie and I want to remain old school so to speak. Good enough for her first 70 years, good enough for the next...
