Byron's wife Nancy called me this morning to tell me Byron had passed away at 3:00 AM this morning. He was being treated for esophagus cancer and took a turn for the worse. Most will remember Byron as heading up the Vintage Racing Association for many years at the Good Guys. He was also the crew chief in charge of tech at the NHRA Hot Rod Reunion in Bowling Green KY from the start of the series. He retired from NHRA a couple years ago due to health reasons. Living in Paducah KY, Byron was looking forward to being track manager at the new Beacon Dragway, opening up right in his own area. I am deeply saddened by the passing of my dear friend. Byron and I worked together for many years in Tech at NHRA National events. He was a true gearhead and loved drag racing, especially nostalgia racing. Funeral arrangements in Paducah are pending.
Very, very sorry to hear of Byron's passing. We got to be friends while I was at IRP. First met him at the Good Guys event in 1988. RIP, Byron.
Sad to hear ,i thought he was doing ok when they said he would manage the new track. He did alot of frame certifications on race cars in this area.
Well, all the nostalgia racers who have gone before him now have a tech inspector and race director to keep them in line. One of the nicest, most capable, and approachable race coordinators ever. Byron was the single most important guy who was responsible for the formation of the Geezer Gassers many many years back when Goodguys was the only nostalgia race program in town. He supported us and pitched us to Goodguys, always supportive in our operations. RIP Byron, you can rest now.............
