I am going to put a c4 behind a 2.3 four banger ford. I am looking for a c4 and have done searches and came up with some questions that can't seem to be satisfied with a Google search.
I have been told that there are large and small bolt pattern c4 cases, which will fit the 2.3 bell housing?
Of the different type, if there is a difference, what vehicles did it come in so I can go junkyard shopping.
What size converter should fit a stock pinto flywheel? I have heard of getting a 9, 10 and 11 inch converter.
I am sorry for the dumb questions, it has been three pedals for me until now and it is all pretty new to me.
I am also starting to doubt going down this road and might ditch the idea and put in a third pedal if it starts to get too expensive.

You can't just get the whole set from the bone yard?

I could be wrong here, but I believe the small bolt pattern (5 bolt) C4's were just the early 64's, and are pretty rare. Most C4s are 6 bolt (large pattern). I bought a 1980 Ford Courier for the 2.3L and C4, so I know they come in those. Mustangs, Rangers, Couriers, possibly T-Birds? I bought my Courier that runs and shifts great for $300. Worth a look.

It takes a (very rare, very specific) 2.3 to C4 bellhousing.

Couriers. Fox mustangs, T-birds and Rangers used C3's for their Automatic 3 speeds..unless its a OD ******.

Yes I already have the bell housing for the 2.3 motor, I need everything else now.
I have gone to turbo ford's website but they give no specifics about the type of trans, if there is a difference.
I have found some info that the c4's differ between how the pumps mount to the case and bell housing, any truth to that?

you dont want the Green Dot C4 for the mid 60's... The 4Cyl ****** has fewer clutches than the 6-8 Cyl trannies...to be honest if you find a good C4 use it and don't look back. You shouldn't have a problem. I would invest into a Quality Stall with Roller bearings rather than a old stall..it will tranfer more power smoothly and run cooler.

Yes. If memory serves, the truck C4 had the pump mount in the case and the cars had the pump mount in the bellhousing.

If you get a C4 and rebuild it for a mild V8 you will NEVER hurt it.

So does this make the converter different since there would be less (or more) clearence between the flexplate and the pump?

My understanding of the difference is in how the pumps bolts down. In the first case the pupm bolts directly to the transmission and seperate bolts bolt the bellhousing to the transmission. The other setup uses the same bolts to bolt the bellhousing and the pump to the ******. As far as I know, no special or different convertor is used.

However, there are at least two convertor bolt patterns. By that I mean bolt circles for the convertor to the flexplate.
