This IS a forum, and publishing the info here rather than in a PM just might help someone else out also!

OK, I have C4 backing plates on my 34 coupe project. They were an aftermarket backing plate for 39 Lincolns. I am using the MT Car products complete reproduction Lincoln brakes and drums on the front of the 34. Less backing plates. From what I have been able to find out the C4 Racing backing plates were made from 58-62. My friend Ray Forbes(his coupe pictured above) turned me on to these. He has them on his cars as well.We were at the LARS swapmeet a few years ago and we bought a bunch of them from a guy that had a bunch of NOS backing plates. I chromed mine. Have yet to get the car on the road. MT Car products was bought by the Boling Bros. and they have all the stuff necesssary to build them with the C4 Racing backing plates. Here is a picture of my setup. Hope this helps everybody that wants to know.

Good, I hoped I helped you out. I don't think your going to be able to use an E-brake on the rears though. I'm using Bronco brakes on my rear. They have two different shoe sizes and you can get a spacer for a 1 3/4 shoe. I think that is what I did. I would have to look again to make sure.

Are you sure that the c4s are such an old reproduction?

I think I'm going to modify the rears with the bolt on peice that mt uses on there rear e brake drum and just modify my backing plate for an e brake.

From what I understand, C4 backing plates were made for oval track racing applications in the 60's.

Just curious if anyone has any more info on the history of the C4 backing plates?

    Thanks,

    Neal

  14. I was sure looking forward to the answer. By the way what are "C4" brakes? Are these the old Lincoln brakes (or a modern reproduction of them?

They were Lincoln like backing plates stamped C4 Racing, San Jose, CA. From the internet lore that I have read, they were made in the 60's for circle track cars...as they outlawed skeleton brakes and real Lincolns were too hard to find at that point. I was hoping to get a first hand answer to their origin, as I have a pair...

Curious about the open skeleton brakes being outlawed. Where and ehy were theu outlawed? Hee in the SE, unaware of anything other than just obsoleted by disc brakes. Please, tell us more.

Like I said, all internet lore I had read about the C4 backing plates. Don't know if there is any truth to it.
