C4 Trans. Big or Small bellhousing?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by frank dog, Jul 10, 2009.

  1. I have a 65 Ford F100 with the 300ci I-6cyl. & 3 speed manual. The trans. is taking a dump little by little(Popping out of gear and hummin).I want to install a C4 trans.
The 300 has the same bolt pattern as a 289-302 V8.Can i use the V8 flexplate?
I need to choose a bellhousing.I didn't know that there was a big and a small housing. Would that be the same with the torq converter?
    Any info would be great.Thanks

300 has zero balance, so you need a 300 6 flexplate. small bellhousing pattern, which 9 out 10 C4's are.

The 300 uses a zero balance flexplate (no balance issues on straight motors) vs. the 28oz early or 50oz late imbalance v8 flexplates.

The "large" bellhousing houses a 164 tooth flexplate that came in 1970 with the Clevelands, the "small" is a 157 tooth for early motors. And there are 2 different torque converter-flexplate bolt circles, make sure you get them matched. Starters don't care.

On the starter the nose is the the only thing different from a manual trans, and an automatic trans.

  5. Holy crap fellas! Busy fucken day.
    Thanks for the info.

  6. A friend of mine was saying he used to swap C4 trans to manual trans using the same bellhousing. Upon looking at my bellhousing,I dont think there is enough room in there to fit a torq converter inside.

No thats really impossible. But you will almost always get a C4 with the bellhousing.
You can use a V8 converter+flexplate, since the counterweight is only tack welded from the factory.Cut it off and your fine.

  8. Lately I've been coming across C4's with out the bellhousing. The C4 has become the choice transmission. Back then I used to pull them out and chuck them and replace it with a C6.
Summit sales reconditioned bellhousings at a resonable price but does not have details on fitments.

Most of the C-4's are used for performance use .
Really the AOD is the choice for street use because of the over drive . You can use that one too . Really brings down the RPM's on .

  10. I would do the AOD Trans but i'm limited with space. I have 71 Camaro front end and had to pick up the engine a few inches to clear oil pan for cross member. That's why i'm choosing C4.

Don't remember the exact measurements, but a 157 tooth is less than 6" deep and the 164 tooth is more. Nice when you go junkyard diving so you don't have to count teeth. :D

    C4>C6

I hate C6s. I have one in my garage I can't give away... And it weighs a damn ton, people bitch about FMX's but at least I can carry one, I gotta move that C6 around on my creeper.

I have a bellhousing from a 6 cyl. ford C4. I used the transmission for a project and kept the bellhousing for no good reason. If you can use it you can have it. You pay the UPS. I will get the part number off it if you need it. mike cain 607 796 0394

  13. Thanks Mike.
I'm assuming that the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same from 240-300ci I-6cyl to a 289-302 V8. If thats what you have,i'll get it for sure. I'll give you a ring tomorrow.
