Does anyone know if Ford EVER made, for ANY 1964 or other model year, a c4 3 speed Automatic transmission WITH a 5 bolt bell housing? Looking for one if they exist, for my '64 V8 260 with a 5 bolt bell housing. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Yes, there was the one-year-only '64 C4 used behind the 289 five-bolt motors. Rare these days, they usually bring a premium price when you can find one. The 260 was only offered with the 2-speed auto...
Yes I owned one came in a 64 station wagon. that had a 289 and C4 automatic. I sold it to a HAMBB member in Calif several years ago. The Price was $100 plus shipping. Only one I ever seen. they are pretty rare. you might post a wanted add in the HAMB classifieds.
Given some of the prices I see for these, it may be cheaper to swap to a later motor... I'll also note that the '64 bell only fits some of the later C4 trans ('65-69?), not all of them.
My girlfriend (wife now) had a 65 Rustang when we first met; there was a learning curve involved there with a Chevrolet guy and a Ford girl. 5 bolt C-4 and a 289; that car became my cross to bear. At one point in time, I bought a 63 Ranchero with a 260/2-speed auto; Holley 2 barrel, dual exhaust, and some chrome on the engine. It was a very responsive and fast little car, even with the 2-speed auto. A lot of parts got swapped over to the Rustang from the Ranchero; could't get my wife to drive the Ranchero, which was why I bought it. Don't discount the 2-speed if you can't find a 5 bolt bell. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Had a local tranny guy convert the 2 speed to a C4 a few years ago. Used a C4 valve body and kept my 5 bolt case and bell. He said we could also swap a later C4 tranny onto the 5 bolt bell. I'm not a tranny builder but his conversion worked fine! SPark
40 years ago, when they weren't so rare I gave one to a friend that needed one. I had bought and used the 5 bolt 289 and the tranny was just in the way.
I still have a 64 5 bolt 289 4V engine it has the stick flywheel & bellhousing. same parts as a 260 has.
Yes I do, have one I pulled out of a 64 289 Fairlane recently, complete with flex plate and convertor and slip yoke. Was working fine. Does have a leak where the shifter/ kickdown lever is located, needs a new seal. where are you located?
I have one that I was running behind a 221 V8. It’s in great shape. Have torque converter and flex plate as well. Make me an offer. The bell housing was not cheap. Theres one on ebay right now for $550 (not mine)
If you still needa bell let me know . Pretty sure i seen one in my storage unit today. I'll let it go cheap.
I have found a 1964 Galaxie 500 sedan that has a 3 speed Cruisomatic transmission (Code 4) that I'm hoping to put behind my rebuilt V8 260 in my 1964 Fairlane 500 that currently has the original 2 speed Fordomatic (Code 3) in it. Both transmissions are confirmed 5 bolt bell housings. This should work...right?
Yes most C4 automatic trans will fit behind this bellhousing. The flexplate might need some holes drilled in it to accept the c4 torque converter.
