C6 Gurus, I NEED HELP PLEASE!

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by holliwood, Mar 27, 2010.

  1. Ok, to start off; I know absolutely nothing about Ford motors and trannys. I've always been a Chevy man, but recently I acquired a 50 Shoebox with a 351W and C6 from a late 80s Ford Van. Now, my question is about the tranny. I just made a new vacuum modulator line so it would shift, but I need to know if there's anything else I need to hook up on the tranny, so it'll shift correctly (like the TV cable on a 700r4). Also, how many gears does it have? Overdrive? Thanks, Shawn

if its a late 80's van it might not be a c6. If it is there is no O.D. if it weights a ton, it might be an eod which has an O.D. pictures or numbers would help.

  4. I always went by the transmission pan. That is the easiest way to tell. The C4 pan is slightly rectangular and has 11 bolts. The C6 is almost square with an indentation on one corner and 17 bolts. Also C4 has separate bell housing. C6 is a 1 piece unit. If it’s neither of those you have yourself a FMX unit.

  5. Thanks. I will check the pan and see what it looks like.

  6. Well, I finally got a look at the tranny. It does have 17 bolts, the pan is square with a small square section cut out of one corner and the opposite corner is angled in, so I suppose it is a C6. Thanks for the info fellas.

you and i are in the same boat,EVERYTHING ive ever owned has been chevy powered.my 53 ford has 302/c6..what i have found with the c6 is make sure your linkage is adjusted right..if mines off just alittle it will work but doesnt shift just right...

  8. Which linkage are you referring to? I was told to just adjust the vacuum modulator to change the shift points. Is that right?

Adjust the vacuum modulator? I see no adjustments available on mine.

Here is a forum dedicated to nothing else but Ford transmissions!

  10. Apparently some of them have a set screw that accessible from the inside of the plug fitting that is adjustable. That's just what I was told. Another question though? Do these things have electric or manual speedo cable hookups? Morrisman, thanks for the link.

  11. Yes, they have an Allen screw inside the modulator. You really shouldn't need to screw with it though, leave it alone. No TV type cable. Hook the vac line to manifold vacuum. Make sure what ever shifter you are using is properly adjusted and drive it! Late 80's van should be mechanical speedo connection.
