Folks Of Interest C9... The story tellers...

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by wingnutz, Nov 13, 2011.

  1. This morning I woke up feeling a bit under the weather so I skipped church turned on the computer and read a wonderful little story from 48Chrysler about a "The Kid that walked into the Shop" which was a well written piece of non-fiction.

Immediately I thought of C9 who was a member of the HAMB and wrote excellent fiction however the stories were loosely based on his own life.

I would spend hours reading his stuff and would become so engulfed that I would stay after work hours reading these stories.

Then I thought... "How cool would it be to share his stories with the new members of this board"?

So I wanted to share C9's stories here as a Historical Memorial to his writings without having to bring to the top all his past threads (save Ryans bandwidth! Hahaha!)

So here is the short list of my friend Jay's writings... enjoy!

    Little Red Roadster
The Red Roadster - Part 1 reprised

The Red Roadster - Part 2 reprised

The Red Roadster - Part 3 reprised

The Red Roadster - Part 4

The Redheads and the Matched Pair of1890's - Reprised

    The Girl on the Rincon

Monday Night Tales from the Dez - Doofus and Whiny Part 10
Contains links to his other stories in this series

    Days of Whine and Roadsters

    One Black and Foggy Night

    The Old Man...

Heck... even his stories going to the grocery store are awesome!

    Sailing Down the Hill

There are many more but I just had to share this with you...

  15. 11-15-2009, I had sent him a p.m. and he responded with his pleasantries and whitty self as usual. Sadly he passed within the hour after his response.

Thanks, wingnutz. I'm ashamed to admit, that I think I missed his passing. I searched a bit, and could'nt find a thread about it. So please allow me to be one of the last to express condolences to you concerning the loss of your friend...and ours...C9...Jay.

I did however, find a thread where he and some others are discussing what it takes to write a good story.

    http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5960&highlight=c9+passing

He shared a lot of his thoughts, including the idea that a good writer needs to express feelings in order for the reader to derive feelings. His words were "You need to wear your heart on your sleeve." It's obvious to me, he was an articulate person, and knew the way to people's hearts. I feel a sense of kindred spirit with him, 'cause I like to mess with words too. (the words don't mind...lol.) I enjoy writing a story, though I've never shared one here...but maybe sometime soon.

It's neat that we can still enjoy the stories he shared with us. I'm gonna take time to read some more of Jay's work. Subscribed.

He was a great writer...proved it time and time again....

We exchanged a few PM's over the years... he always told me how he would drive his roadster in the early morning's when the frost was in the air and he'd head to town for some coffee with friends.

I was saddened by his passing. RIP....

I was going back and forth with him the day before he passed away. He was trying to help me I.D. some slot mags I had picked up.

Thanks for posting this Mark. Jay was one in a million. I used to, hell, I still do, love to read his stories. They provided me so much inspiration for my own writing. And his sweet tea recipe is still used to this day. Godspeed, Jay . . . .

  21. Jay was great. I miss him.

  22. I met Jay online a bunch of years ago as I was starting my 31 Pontiac build. He became my mentor, encourager, and close friend. I miss him daily. Heavy sigh.

Here's a ten year old picture of Jay and his sweetie, Gay.

  24. Thanks for posting those links Wingnutz.

I loved Jay's stories and spent many hours reading them. Occasionally, I do a search for Jay's old posts and stories. What a guy. He is truly missed.

  25. Jay and I have never met personally but he "Loved" the fact I was running a snotty 455 Olds in my Roadster and he was a real fan of the BOP Big Blocks!

We corresponded many times via pm's but never talked on the phone as we were always a couple of time zones from either sleep or for me work.

What has struck me was his ability to write and build cars... not many can do both or one better than the other however Jay was fully capable of both.

But the main reason I put this post together is so his works can be accessed from this single thread.... I don't know if I do it any justice but it's my way of saying "Thanks Jay"!

Hear was the paragraph that I read regarding the HAMB's use and I just want to pass it on so it never dies!

Quote from Jay... This book, “The Red Roadster” is posted here for several reasons. I’m not going to attempt to have it published. As well as I didn’t want to leave it in the dusty recesses of the closet never to see the light of day either. It’s the first book in a series of seven, all about life on the coast as well as the two things us guys love the most. Our girls and our cars. You will find several things - stories, locale and characters - in this book that have a presence in the later books.

Mr. Ryan has graciously allowed me to post the complete book here in four separate posts.

When he helped with tech questions, he was patient and thoughtful. He never came across like a ball busting dick. Not many of those kind of people today. He had REAL talent for conveying a story.
