CA folks... How hard is it to buy/register a car from "out-of-state"?

I've found a 1965 Truck in Washington that runs and drives and is registered (in Washington) that I desperately want. My biggest concern isn't it's condition or the distance, but how possible it will be to register and legally drive/own in CA.
Maybe all the "horror stories" of the difficulty of registering out-of-state vehicles only apply to them "smoggy" vehicles, but I thought if anyone knew, it'd be someone here.

And the guy says it's only got "surface rust".
How much does "surface rust" vary from state-to-state

(he explicitly said it had no "rust through", but I'm still waiting for pics)

    Thanks!!!

It is pretty easy to do. You should go to the DMV and ask wha they require. I seem to remember some paperwork having to be notorized. Also, smog does not apply (yet) as it is pre-75.

really easy, definately go the AAA route. Make sure to ask the seller if all the original VIN locations are clean and legibile. You will be needing the AAA or DMV to do a VIN verification.
I bought a wagon last winter in AZ. I got the ***le before a few months before I brought to CA, in that time I started my registration and got insurance. Also write down the mileage, what you might want to do is add the amount of miles your going to drive to you home.

What you do it tell them you need a temp #, the ghetto red numbers for the rear windshield, to bring it to them to get the VIN verification done. (Don't mention your driving the car car from out of state with this).
This number is a temp registration to allows you to drive the car until it is registered.
    This senario worked for me.

You can also ask at the local DMV for that state if them have a temp moving permit to drive the car out of state, AZ has one like this that cost 15.00, But I imagine you want to have some sort of Liability insureance at the least.

surface rust in some areas means that the rusted part is laying on the ground. you better get real good close ups before the final deal is done. even then see if you can find someone to verify the condition. you can always have it shipped if you do not want to drive all the way back to Calif.

x 2 everything Abe said, AAA is the shiznit, don't go near the DMV unless you absolutely can't afford the membership.

one more point where I messed up, the ******* I bought my car from told me it had a clean ***le, he just failed to mention the vin on the ***le didn't match the one on the car!!!

In some states thats no prob, but in CA when registering a car from OOS you *have* to have the VIN verified.

So be sure to ask if they match :)

My dad has purchased many old cars from out-of-state.
1.) Don't go to DMV... I sugggest Automobile Club
2.) The car MUST have a ***le. Just a Bill-Of-Sale alone wont do. If all your getting is a Bill-Of-Sale, I would recommend you have the person ***le it in their state.

If the car has a ***le, all AAA does is check the VIN on the ***le to the VIN on the car.
If it's a match, you're good to go. They will be able to issue you plates right there on the spot.

Everything 29coupe said...but don't forget the fees. About five years ago I paid 92 bucks to transfer the Wisconsin ***le to California plates and pinkslip on my '54 Ford. Took all of 20 minutes. Fees have most definitely gone up, just not sure by how much though.

My car came from Washington state with a ***le and no vin on the car. Took it to the Highway Patrol and they looked over my ***le and issue me a new vin. All they wanted to know was why it didn't have a vin and I told them because there was a new front chip on the car. They put two new vin plates on the car and it was free.
See if you can find a HAMBER in Washington to look at the truck for you. :D

Make sure you check out the truck good. lots o rust in them parts of washington.

    Like all have said.

    Vin #
    ***le
    Bill of sale
    AAA
    Vin Verification
Vin#s need to match the ***le

Then it should be no problem

I know of a service that does it here for a reasonable amount.

They are located in Livermore if interested.

  14. One thing no one has brought up is the fact that your car is a truck. This means commercial registration, you might also have to have the truck weighed, I'm not sure. If you do then make the truck as light as possible for the weigh in, reg fees are based on weight. You may be able to do a statement of facts for this if your DMV is cool. I have gotten away with this, just writing down that I have not altered the vehicle from factory specs. LOL look at my avatar!

You will have to pay use tax (sales tax) on the amount of the bill of sale. Keep that in mind when you buy the truck. The FOGGER

Yep, a truck will need to be weighed. The fees go by the weight, so pulling out the spare and anything in the cab should be done. You have to take it to a public scale (moving companies, etc) and tell them that you need it for DMV.
The rates are every 200-500 pounds, I think (Ask your AAA contact), so you may want to weigh it then see if you can get it into the next lower weight cl***. If you are 20 pounds shy, pull the generator or something....

***le, VIN (Serial Number actually) verification, weight paperwork and pay the fees.... Plates will be Commercial, allowing you to park in those zones, which makes up for the extra ~50 bucks a year.

I forgot about the weight. Make sure that you have it weighed before you go to the DMV or they will just send you back out to weigh it.

It was 15.00 to have may truck weighed when I brought it to California from M***achusetts.

    About the weight certification:

    More important information here:

You can also go to most any truckstop and get your pickup weighed as well, they are usually $8 to $12.

From my own experience, it was pretty cruisy... car was a 1970 Cadillac Fleetwood 75, I wasn't even in the country at the time, bought the car on ebay and organised for the seller to deliver it from Nevada to San Jose in California, and present my brother (who lives there) with a signed off copy of the ***le... (Car is now registered in my brothers name, which should make it easy when I decide to bring it back to Australia - we're hoping to get it to Bonneville next year before putting it on a boat)

This was done, car was not even registered anywhere at the time, and the process of registration went something like this:

    1. he took the ***le down to the DMV and had a chat to them, they gave him temporary registration for a month without seeing the car and said 'bring the car in within a month and we'll check the numbers match the paperwork and give you plates'

    2. he took the car in, as agreed, and the DMV inspector simply checked the VIN and odometer readings, and put the paperwork through

    3. at some time during these proceedings, obviously he had to pay for this, costs were normal Californian rego plus state sales tax on the car, as it was purchased from out of state (sales tax was roughly $300 on a $3000 car)

(he also added the vehicle to his normal insurance policy so we could drive it while we were over there)

FYI you *don't* need a ***le or bill of sale to register a car. Since mine had a bogus ***le that didn't match the VIN, we threw it away and applied for a ***le as if it were a field car.

you can also go to those insurance places that also offer dmv service. but most of all if your gonna put down that you bought it for pennys then dont go to dmv. they are like dogs when they see a cl***ic car paperwork come in saying they paid $500. they may tell you that you have to bring it in for them to see. if they feel its worth more, they can make your life miserable. they did that to my dad on a 37 ford coupe. the women said she knew cl***ic cars and that it is worth more then $1,000 and she tagged it. he had to take pictures of it and all the milkcrate boxes of parts it came with the guy took one look at it and signed it off. now i either go with my private dmv service guy or if its simple then AAA. if you get a car in pieces and its off the computer with just a bill of sale. then there gonna want to see it and it hase to be running street legal and if they tell you to go to the CHP, the officer will want you to take him for a ride around the block if he wants to, just to make sure everything works. but with something like your deal with a clean pink. i would just go to AAA and tell them you will want a quote on cl***ic car insurence also. that way they will do what ever they can to get that insurance deal also, plus there cl***ic car insurance is cheap as hell. got all my cars with them. and that road service does come in handy i haved used it a time or two. good luck with the deal
