I have a california truck 1955 1/2 that was last registered in 1987 and it is out of the system. I have the pink slip and truck.

what is the process to get it back in the system?

I went to the DMV and they gave me a Application for Title or Registration (to be filled out by me), Verification of Vehicle (to be filled out by the DMV/or police officer), and a Certificate of non operation to be filled out by me.

Does this sound right? Reason I ask is sometimes if you go into the DMV with the same question/problem you will get different answers and I just want to cover my bases before starting the paperwork.

    Sounds right to me.
App for title is to put the title in your name.
Verification is just to verify that the vin on the truck matches the one on the old pink.
Non-op until you get it driveable.

    good luck.

If it already has a CA title, no VIN inspection is required. Just transfer into your name and a new title will be in the mail.
It worked for me. Go to a different office or AAA.

cool...sounds straight forward. I need to verify that the pink/vin on vehicle match. My 52 chevy car did not match up and I had to go to the highway patrol to get them to verify it. they said yup they do not match and took the number on the car and put it on the pink. was not a big deal except getting the car parts over to the highway patrol office.

I have a CA pink slip but the car is not in the system. I am off on Friday I guess I could go to a different DMV and see what answer I get.

Having the vin verification is not that big of a deal. Just want to avoid it if possible.

They'll do a search to see if there was a non-op filed or if there were ever any violations on the vehicle after the registration expired. If there were, you would have to pay the registration fees/fines, possibly to date.

Have you owned it since 87? If not just play dumb. Go in there with everything you have and tell them you want to register it...non-0p?

Do you have a bill of sale? They'll need to know it's value for registering it.

I have owned it for many many moons. Longer then I can remember. Not since 87 but early 90's i believe. It is out of the system so there are no violations. It has been sitting in the side yard of a house my mom owns forever.

  9. I had the same problem before, and I had to tow the old car to the local CHP to have the title verified. The CHP guy was nice and didn't give me any hassles because it was obvious that the old car matched the old title I had. I had the old title for the car, but the DMV had purged it from its database because it hadn't been registered for a certain amount of years.

I wonder why they think it's necessary to purge the old cars out of their system. It's not like the info they have on file is hogging massive amounts of hard drive space in the state computers.

It is much easier to process this through the AAA Auto Club. You have the right paperwork....just save some time.

Unless they changed it since I did my '55 second series you will also need to get it weighed at a certified for te purpose and turn in an "official" weight slip.
I got told by a supervisor when I said "it's a Chevy pickup, they all weigh the same!"
He said "If there isn't a weight slip in the paper packet when we send it to Sacramento, they will just reject it, so go get a weight slip for "the" pickup truck and ring it in."

I have some cop friends in the town. I imagine I just need to haul the car the long one block up to my shop and have one come over and verify it.

thanks for all the replies and pms. The CA DMV while sometimes easy to deal with can make even an easy subject complicated sometimes.

weight slip...first i have ever heard of that one. damn.

  14. application for duplicate(lost?) title and Vin verification is usually all. But if they also want a non-op, that's easy enough. But, yeah, you're golden

Yes.. weight slip needed.. Just did my 38 and had to have a certified scale weigh it... EVILT

  16. Idahno, but if registration hasn't been kept up and it's still on their computer system you have to pay all of the back fees. In other words, falling off the system can save money, in a roundabout way.

    Thanks,

just curious if you went with no fenders? heard the vehicle has to be under 1500 pounds for no fenders.

  18. oh yes the dmv can (and most likely will) make you verify the vin.....if it's out of the system then anything goes. i had it done twice, you just take it down to the dmv (with an appoinment) or the chp and have them fill out the paperwork (like your car). you already have the title (is it signed and dated in the release of intrest spot), if it's filled out correctly by the old owner you should skate through on that. then the non op is to stop anymore fees to be accured.

  19. any records of that will fall off the system after 5 or 6 years with no activity. if someone trys to start the process and stops then the 5 or 6 years starts from there. i had to pay 3 or 4 years of back fees on my elco because someone started the ball rolling a lein sale for it ('91 or so).

Call your local police station and see if they will send a cop over to do the vin....works in Benicia.

I know some of the cops...as a joke I am going to take the paperwork down to the local Fast Trip gas station/food mart place this weekend where the city and county police hang out and see if one will fill it out for me.

If not...then I will try and set up a time to get one of them to come up and do the vin check.

If you Register the pickup as non-commercial in CA, no weight slip is required. Your license plate will be same letter and number configuration as a car plate as opposed to the truck plate configuration. The downside is that you are not legally allowed to haul cargo without being subject to being cited.

  23. Wool I got commercial plates on my Comet, so I can haul what I want. I was told they don't care for YOM plates.

    Thanks,

OK...I have the truck in my shop now. Here is the tag that is in the drivers side door.

My question is what do these numbers mean?
    M255L and 001231?

These numbers are not on the pink slip that I see.

The vehicle ID on the pink slip is a 12 digit code consisting of numbers and letters.

If you have the title, you shouldn't need a weight cert on it...least I never have...but it's been 3 or 4 years since I registered one that had been sitting ('56 1/2 ton with commercial plates)....but about the same time ('02 or '03), I did have to get weight cert on a pickup that I did not have title for even though I said I did not want commericial plates on it ('31 Dodge PU-get this though...I'm still fighting them because the idiot marked "smog check needed" on the paperwork)...vin verification was easy...just call the CHP/PD, and they'll send someone over whereever the vehicle is.

Best thing you can work with is the easy Paperwork you receieved, hope you got the persons name, or reconize them when you return to the DMV so you don't get the run-around.

    Good luck, just my experiences

You can also if you have AAA get them to come out and sign off on the paper work as well.

Do you not have a vin # on the car? They usually only make you do this if the vin is gone so they can re-issue a new vin number

I thought the tag in the driver door would have the vin number on it.

I wish I knew what the numbers on the tag meant.

I am researching to see if the vin could be anywhere else on the truck.

  28. that should be the vin tag. all the one's i've seen had the numbers/letters stamped from the back like the "chevrolet" even my '50 buick.

That should be a vin but didn't you say that's not the vin number that's on the title?

If its not then you need to go through all the hoops scrap the old pink and fill out the paper work for a lost title. Its easier to that then going through all the stuff your doing now.

Found out what my vin means
    Serial # : M255L001231
Mfg Year : 1955 (second series)
    Model : 3200 Pickup
    Wheelbase : 123.2 inches
    Plant : Los Angeles, CA

odds are the vin on my title is the engine block number.
Guess I will toss the title and go the lost title route. thanks for the tips everyone!
