all i really see is the crimp/feral type. i'm setting up my ebrake and looking for some options. can cable be brazed? how are u guys joining or ending cable. where to source?
I had to shorten a clutch cable once......really short. I crimped it and still wasn't satisfied so I hit the end of it with the mig. I never had any issues.
I made new ebrake cables for the c30 last July. My cables were 1/8" dia. with a 5/16" dia. nub on one end and a 3/8" dia. on the other. Went to Ace hdw. and bought the cable, a couple of long bolts and the strongest silver solder they had. Don't forget the correct flux. Cut the proper length nubs from the non threaded portion of the bolts and drilled 1/8" holes thru. I made up the ***emblies and soldered the nubs with a propane torch (cherry red). A little boiling water will remove any flux residue. Two new ebrake cables cost about 25 bucks and 45 minutes of time.
For smaller cables like throttle & kickdown cables, an old-school bicycle shop will have some useful ends. "Knarps" are a very useful widget that even the bike mechanic might not know about.
thanks for the input fellas. i'm going from 50 ford drum to an early vw hand brake. i think i got it figured out.
Aircraft Spruce has a good ***ortment of the swaged-on ends, balls, etc. and they make up custom cables.
These guys are helpful too.. http://store.controlcables.com/servlet/StoreFront They made me an e-brake cable for my Pontiac using my destroyed piece as a pattern, turned out fantastic.
