I ran out of gas for my weed eater and had some left over R/C gas so I used it. I would have to say that it does not have much life left in it now but it sure sounded cool. The thing reved like crazy and there was no stopping it. The only way to turn it off was to slam the end into the dirt .

Search for Nitro on Wikpedia. There was an interesting article in a swedish magazine the other week, and basically: Gas will ignite with 18kg air to 1 kilgram gas. Nitro will ignite with 14 kg air, so that explains the blowers on the fuel cars. Some guy tried it in an european junk car and it worked, I saw it, but didn't give you the cackle I guess you want. Just the smell....

There's a lot of good info on this in old Hot Rod magazines, FWIW. A good mix for the coctail is to mix the nitro with alcohol 50/50 - and then add 10% of this mix to your fuel. You'll have to jet up - but not as much as someone runnin' 40% pop.

The cackle is a combination of nitro AND cam overlap; you get the pop outta a heavily cammed motor. If it won't idle below 1000 RPM - she'll pop on pop.

Boy ..this thread can go for weeks .. I did the lawn mower trick & small block chevy ( adv the timming a bit ) on 100% ch3no2 boy ran like a rocket untill it quit and granaded !! ..got some pop but what do I know... NITRO is only in my name

FYI ...Nitromethane is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3NO2. It is the simplest organic nitro compound. It is a slightly viscous, highly polar liquid commonly used as a solvent in a variety of industrial applications such as in extractions, as a reaction medium, and as a cleaning solvent. It has intermediate in organic synthesis, it is used widely in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, explosives, fibers, and coatings & racing fuel.

They say it attracts moisture also. Thats why you run your r/c cars outta gas when you are done to prevent rust in the cylinder. We ran 10 % in our r/c cars. I guess you could run it out with gas in a conventional motor to prevent the rust thing. I thnk the cackle is from the compression in the big nitro motors. They time those things by looking at the dent in the main bearings when they light on the nitro. As far as smell... that crap burns your eyes and smells like hell!!

I run 20% in my R/C truck......has some moisture in it as kwiksilver said....gotta lube the engine after running....
Years ago, a company I worked for had @ 6 55 Gallon barrels of Methanol.....I was soooo low on fuel I didn't think I'd make it home.....so I poured in @ 3 gallons of the stuff in my 440 Charger.....it did run, but definitely was low on power.....
After that, I did continue to use it as a mix, usually about a gallon per tankful, as it did run better mixed with the gasoline.......back in my street racin' days........

  10. A Lwan Boy powered mini bike. A frozen river through a small town in the mid 70's Four boys with a bit of guidence from a demented local model airplane guru. A left over gallon of 50/50 nitro mix fron the previous engine melting model airplane season.
Remove the carb jet, 'cause it's gonna need some more fuel. Mix airplane fuel with gas at 50%. Use eather to start. Holy cow, it runs!!
Get it down to the river! Restart engine. The iron pipe handle hurts fingers when the engine kicks back...hard.
Idle is poor, no low speed power. Runs real rich. One boy gets on, two boys push the bike up to enough speed to get some air for power.
Those 10 inch wheels must have spun 70 MPH!!!!
Three runs, the Lawn Boy is toast. Three of the four boys decide they must be hot rodders. They continue various antics to this day.
    Don't remember any cackle. though.

  11. What you guys want is Hydrazine!!!
