I have a line on a early 60`s caddy engine.I think it would make a neet power plant for a early rod.Any info I can get on these engines would be great.Things like the cost of rebuilding one and How good are thay. Also is there a gearbox that will fit these engines.

    331 / 390 / 472 / 500 Are all good choices. The 472/500 came out in 1968.
I'm pretty sure that the 390 was installed into new Caddys up until 1962 and then the 429 was used from 1963 until 1967. I would stay away from the 429 due to a lack of replacement and hop-up parts.

We just put a fresh built 472/TH400 into a '64 Coupe DeVille. Came out really nice, had to fab motor mounts and modify the front crossmember just a pinch.

I've got a 429 motor in my shop right now that anyone can have for FREE. It's got a bottom end knock.

Take a look at Maximum Torque Specialties if it turns out to be a 472/500.

sorry about that fitzee [IMG] sean's mostly right, except '63 was a 390 too,but a completely different design.i think the only thing that swaps with '62 and earlier 390 is the piston rings.'64 is the first year of the TH400,but they only came in certain models.'62 and earlier cad you can bolt up '55 ONLY hydra-matic,which is a fgood trans too.confused yet? [IMG] do the research, don't get stuck with something only a restorer can use-george

    George,
Cool. I think my brother is ready to part with that tranny. I'll find out what he wants for it. When did you want to come by the shop?

  6. Yorg's right: stay away from the 63 390. They're a real orphan. The 59-62 Cads are probably the best choice. O'brien's Truckers has the valley covers for these and Offenhauser does some real nice finned rocker covers. Most peformance inatkes will fit too....including the log manifolds by Weiand and Offenhauser. Some of these things even fit up to '67.

  7. Oh yeah, check with Egge for rebuild kits. You'll see by the prices for the 63 390 what I mean about it being an orphan.

Thanks guys,Don`t know much about them engines.Good info to know.Gathering part for a old school rod and want to find a engine that is different but not costly to redo.I`m working on a 63 convertable for a guy and he has another 63 and a 64 for part.If the price is right and the engine and trans is complete I might go for it.

I guess it's more fun to me to actually buld something that requires a bit of hunting....the old caddy motors are like this....lotsa speed parts, just tough to find...especially any kind of aftermarket distributor....but man do you get some cool stories trackin' that shit down!
