    Hey all,

So I have a 1949 Cadillac 331 V8 and am trying to figure out which of the two oil ports by the distributor is the oil "out" port and which is the oil "in" port - they've both been blocked off since I've owned the motor and the manual hasn't been any help. There's one that's on a flat surface and one that's angled (if you've seen this type of engine before, you'll know what I mean).

Anybody got any advice on this matter?

    Thanks!!!

I think they are both an 'out'....this pic is from my 51 book; I read it that the angled port is for the pressure sender, and the straight port is plugged, coming from the rear main.

    Okay...

So where do I plug in the oil lines then? I'm stumped.

  4. Just plug them both and throw away that ineffective filter system.

I have rebuilt a '53 Cad 331 for my 'someday' roadster project and

plan to leave all that stuff off. They look so much better without it.

Just change the oil a little more frequently and keep an eye on its

condition on the end of the dipstick. Really! If it bothers you about

the thought of regularly changing out oil that still might have some 'life'

in it, then tip it in some more modern hack that has a modern full flow

filter and get a second use out of it. I removed the filter and lines on

my '50 ford flathead and change the oil every 2500 miles. Then I put it in

my father's 80's T*y*ta and he burns it up in that old thing. How 'green'

    is that??;)

If you are talking about where to mount the canister filter, the ports for the filtration is up front, not back.

one on the top of block, one on the front face...

    verbatim from the manuel:
A drilled and tapped hole at the top of the left cylinder block near the oil filter housing intersects the header which lubricates the left rocker arm. Another drilled and tapped hole at the front of the left cylinder block, near the water pump to block inlet, intersects the oil drain back hole from the cylinder head. These holes are provided for the installation of the Oil Filter inlet and outlet connections. The inlet pipe should be connected at the top of the block, and the outlet pipe from the Filter to the front of the block.

Here's a really dumb question. Which is the in/out on the stock filter canister??
