Caddy guys........as we all know, the 331 was introduced in ‘49 models and was equipped with 6 volt electrical systems through 1953. Researching the application of a Delco starter motor by model # that I am listing for sale, it shows it is correct for 1951 thru 1953 models. So, what is different about 1949 and 1950 starters? Do they fit and operate okay, but just have a different model #, or do they have physical differences that prevent their interchanging with the ‘51/‘53 applications! Thanks for any clarification you may be able to offer. Ray
Quick peek in 1956 MoToR flat rate shows 1107969 as '50-'52. Cad went 12v in '53, but the 969 would work just fine. Many of the '49 internal parts are '49 Cad only, most external parts interchange with other GM '49-'53. The drive is same '49-53, and fits all GM cars same years.
Hollander says 49 is all alone also. I have a 49 331 in my 40. the 49 starter has a weird square solenoid. Mine was broken and I put a 1951 starter on mine with no issues. I think the only difference was different size terminals where the wires hook up
Don't forget the starters that came on 1953 Cadillacs with DYNAFLOW! They had to be different than the hydramatic starters.
