I have a '55 I can't sell and a 472 that does not have a home, I would like to hear more about that swap. How much does the floor have to be modified for the trans?
i have a 53 i put a 472 in, stock oil pan, i just cut the crossmember about three inches and boxed it. ill probly run a remote oil filter since that is pretty close to the cross member, also exhaust clearance can be tight i lucked out with stock manifolds but its close to steering box. (speedway block huggers are not cheep) it sets forward a bit so you have to work on the rad support to get every thing to fit right as for radiator im not their yet
for teh record guys, i just dropped a 64 429 into my 59. exact drop in and fit! i used teh cross membber from the 64 and it evven used factory holes and tranny sat on it just fine. something to think ab...
I just found a good running 66 429 with trans... at a good price. So how would this deal fit in a '52 Pontiac? Yeah I know about the oiling system problem but this engine is a runner and would get this heap on the road for a reasonable cost...
If you have their contact information I would love to talk to them as I as doing 1952 cad 331 to a 472 (1973). cbell@prodigy.net
If you’re comfortable fabricating a new crossmember, or modifying your existing one in a non-scary way, go for it. But swapping in a 472/500 is one of many fine examples of “biting off 20% more than you can chew.” It’s definitely not impossible, but it definitely has a huge potential to stall a project for years, when you could’ve stuck with what you had (or stayed in that engine family) and been driving it. Food for thought.
I’ve had Cadillacs with a 331 and with a 429. Bigger wasn’t better. The 331 was a much smoother running engine. Neither was modified for more speed. Just kept them like they were originally intended, cruising. I had a 472 Cadillac but that’s OT. It rode and drove great the way it was as intended.
