I have a 40 caddy flathead with 0 compression in #7 and water in #7, I pulled the head and it dont look terrible so I'm thinking try fix in the car by putting new gasket on and getting exhast valve to close, but does anyone know if it was common or uncommon for either the head or block to crack? or have any other help would be much appreciated. Thanks

The valve is propably stuck open, thats why you have no compression in that hole?,you can try rolling it over and push the valve down every time it sticks open, put some marvel mystery oil on the stems of all them. Those blocks were no more likely to crack then any other motor, they are relatively simple to work on,parts are still available at napa and the likes, wer same from 37-48,few differences but basically same motor.I would roll it over without the head on it until you can get the valve to open and shut like it is supposed to,or you could remove it and put a new guide in it and a valve. However tis will only be a bandaid for it if the rest of the motor is weak.
