I'm about to hook up my floor shifter cable. I need to know the shift pattern for my Cadillac Dual Coupling Hydramamtic. I also need to know which way the arm moves to shift into which gears. This is a '59-'62 390 with stock dual coupling trans.

    Thanks a ton!

I just want to clarify...the shifter arm on the trans itself is all the way forward for Park and all the way to the rear for Reverse?

Man sorry I ment to responde to your PM.. first you should throw that hydro in the trash..

Basically I had to re engineer the stock lokar.. the cable runs from the right side of the trans back then under the trans and come around towards the front of the car and connects to the shift lever.. I also have no tranny lock.. since it had to be hacked up..

so All the way forward is Park and Reverse so when I start may car I have to pull the shifter all the way down witch is nutral then all the way forward for reverse.. then first click from there is first, second click is First + second, third click is first second and third... last is nutral...

I can't wait to get rid of that trans.. just sayin.. hope its eaiser on you than it was on me.. I aged 5 years cause of that trans :D

I'm using a Lokar cable setup for throttle and tv/kickdown.

Alright, maybe I'm a bit confused. Let me see if I've got this straight...
Shifter in the cab all the way forward with TH350/TH400/powerglide goes like this...
    P
    R
    N
    D
    2
    1

Cadillac dual coupling hrdramatic goes like this?
    R
    1
    1/2
    1/2/3
    N

    ***EDITED TO ADD***
I'm searching and finding different year hydramatics have different shift patterns. Some have Park and some don't? Anyway, I'm sure I can figure out the pattern once I drive it. But I want to make sure I get the shift cable hooked to push or pull the shifter arm on the trans in the correct direction so my shifter starts all the way forward. I hope that makes sense, lol.

I figured that was the reason we don't see the old girl out more often. Well I'll tell you what Evel, if you ever want to trade let me know. I'll get a proper trans behind that thing!!!:D:D:D

Bump for maybe some West coast night crew help? I need to get this figured out so I can attach the shifter cable facing the right way.

    Thanks again!

Not familiar with your tranny, but if it was original column shifted the shift arm on the tranny is likely pointing down. When you get your pattern figured out, if you don't like the direction you have to move the shifter, remember if you have the room, you can re-engineer the shift arm on the tranny to where it points up, and that would reverse the shift pattern.

That is a lot of gears. I think I need a new shifter, lol.

Seriously though, if'n you want to send me a th400 and an adapter, I'll run a different trans. Or better yet a la salle and all the necessary stuff needed for that including machining the whatchamacallit, I'd be down for that too. Mark me down.:D

Isn't it true though Evel that a 365 or 390 can't use a stick trans without some machine work? His is a '59 390.

Oh and I like the '39 Ford trans idea....may as well load it with some lincoln gears while your at it. I know I should have in mine before it went in.

All it really takes is a pilot bushing hole machined into the crank, and a fairly rare bell housing that adapts to the 55 and earlier cad trans bolt pattern. Then You can start trying to dig up the flywheel, bell housing and trans.

also be sure to properly adjust the kick down, its not like reg 400 or the like. it controls the fluid transfer and will fuck shit real quick if not correct. if you get it right there decent transmissions. id try to find a stock tv rod instead of the lokar cable. i may have a extra, pm me next week, im on the road now
