Cleaning up the bike shop a little bit today, and found this. Never opened, never sprayed, never cold, never hot, just sitting behind stuff on a shelf. Brought back fond memories of painting chopper stuff with this stuff back in the, what 70s? 80s? Now I'm thinking I've got more of it at home, also buried in the garage. I will dig it out tonight! Tried shaking it a bit, wasn't able to wake it up. I'm so excited, I'm going to find something that needs to be metalflake blue now. I know, I know, it's not going to come out of the can.....Probably a solid chunk. But with all this talk of the high price of paint...... EDIT..,, I think the flake and the clear are at home... might have the entire setup!
put it on a paint shaker that will loosen it up,ive done it lots. Its the best way to shake any aerosol can,if its lost pressure you could decant it and spray it through a small gun.
I always thought 'flake" rattle cans were a bit of an optimistic description compared to what was around in the 70s. But cal custom defined the "bling" of the custom world with its custom parts and chrome plate that was a few atoms thick.
While this isn’t Cal Custom brand, I sprayed my go cart with it back in the ‘70s. It’s not flake like a dune buggy body, but it popped pretty well! It hasn’t held up to bad either.
I was using Cal Custom candy colors in the mid sixties for bicycles. I kept the cans until just a few years ago because of the awesome results.
Ha cha cha Flake cans feel full, too. Lots of other 50 year old spray cans, like Moriarity's can of wrinkle paint. Used a lot of that on my old panhead when I couldn't afford chrome. Come to think of it, I can't afford chrome now, either.
Thanks all, that brought back some memories, never used the candies put did use the kringle paint. Dan
I remember that stuff! I did a metalflake flame job on a motorcycle tank around 1970 with that, looked great! Downside? The clear took forever to dry (I'm talking months...) and any gas spilled on it required another rubbing out. It never did fully dry before I sold the bike. I'll admit that I buried the flake in clear because I didn't want the usual 'pebbled' finish you saw with a typical 'real' flake job. But it did have nice BIG flakes.
Couple of companies still selling flake-in-a-can: https://www.dna-paints.com/shop/flakez/aerosol-metal-flake/ Spray Can Flakes – Tropical Glitz Rattle Bombs – Roth Metal Flake Cheers, Harv
