  11. There tons of cars that have burnt to the ground. One of the enthusiasts I know had his garage burn down with his car in it. But his house was spared. Which is way more important.
Some guys left whole car collections in large parking lots. A lot of enthusiasts storage facilities offered to store cars as it was happening.

the whole situation sucks right now.

one thing to make it worse had he parked them all across the street where there are no trees they may have survived:(

  13. Just so sad! The loss of life and property that should have never happened.

They didn’t burn because of the trees. The internal heat in the fire baked them. Some may have lit off, but the cars in the garage burned with the building. The cars on the street show more heat damage than lit on fire damage. Regardless it is a shame they are probably beyond repair.

if the trees were not on fire they would not have burned.

I looked at the house on Google maps. the garage was not very big. it looked to be one car deep. other than the Lincoln and what is next to it none were in the garage, the cars up front by the the Desoto were not on the street, they were behind a tall hedge and under trees in his front yard.

there are no houses across the street and no trees. had he moved them there they most likely would not have burned. saw plenty of intact vehicles on the street in many videos of destruction.

Not sure I understand the “ never should have happened” part...

  17. So Very True!

Of course my eyes went directly to the 66 or 67 Toro as I have one that I am in the progress of doing a restoration on. I thought to myself.....here I am crabbing about a bullet hole through my hood & this poor guy lost his whole car + many others. Prospective I guess.

    God Bless

  19. Two things could have lessened or prevented these fires. One Maintenance, on this I’m a stickler. My entire work life was maintenance. It works! Obviously the clearing of underbrush and dead vegetation would have been key to reducing fire threats. Two, putting tax dollars into building water storage and desalination systems in order to provide water to fight fires.
Actually there are other reasons , like where dollars were spent but I won’t get into it here on the HAMB.

Truly a epic loss for so many.

The wave of “blame the victim” or “blame the system “ sentiment is unproductive. There is little anyone can do to fight a firestorm driven by high wind in a already fire-prone area which has had virtually no rain in eight months. In the middle of the event there is little time or choice to save cars, let alone yourself. There are, and will be a lot of “what if’s” to come and most of it comes down to “so what” for the victims who have to rebuild their lives.

  23. Yup most people have no idea what these events are like. More water is not stopping anything when the winds are blowing as ferociously and constantly like they were in California. It would be like peeing on a house fire.

I know this is a car site but really who cares about cars when people have lost lives and everything they own.

Well it’s interesting that those areas around SoCal were never really anyplace the First Nations people ever used for settlement sites as they knew of those wind conditions...

I supposed the developers over the years just presumed modern day fire fighting capabilities could handle any fire threat.

  25. Mark, I'm afraid all the maintenance in the world wouldn't help when those 45 to 70 mph high Santa Ana winds continue to work against the fire fighters.

In California, it's the fires and winds and in North Carolina it was the winds and the flooding.
in western North Carolina 126,000 Homes Destroyed, 104 Confirmed Deaths and $60 Billion in Damages.

California is heading down the same roads with the destruction, prayers for all concerned, I have seen a few towns that are completely going, just like California. HRP

I just saw a picture of a burnt out neighborhood but there is a colorful white and blue Volkswagen bus parked on the street. everything else is burnt. the lady just brought it shortly before the fire had it parked on the road and when the fire happened she just grabbed her dog and took her daily car that was in the driveway. doesn't even looked like the van was touched at all.

I live real close to the Kettle Moraine State Forest here in Wi. and they are in there all the time trimming/cleaning it out and I am glad they do.
