What is going on with the 'black' plates is you can now slapped them on you OT 63 split window if: they never had them, you had to turn them in, or someone liked the blue plates, or your car had been out of the CA DMV for some time. Ta da! Instant "It has the black plates". As mentioned, they have to be a pair and clear DMV (a phone call). In So Cal at Pomona clear plates go for $175 to $350 depending on condition and actually series numbers. Certain cities were issued certain number series.

  2. I have never heard that certain cities were issued certain number series unless you are referring to the the fact that plates were delivered to the DMV or auto club in consecutively numbered batches for distribution. Is this what you are referring to?

I think you are right, probably waiting to see what kind of response the program gets

OK, so I have a '38 pickup I bought in Florida, has a ***le but no plates. Got my VIN verification this week. I bought some black and yellow plates at a rummage sale, had them run and they are clear. So I can take them to the DMV along with my FL ***le, Bill of Sale and Vin verification and they will let me use the plates? No yearly fees tacked on?

Not quite sure how DMV will view those plates on your '38. Yellow/gold on black plates were issued from '63-'69. My '57 Chevy Wagon still has yellow/black plates, but that is because that was what was on it when I bought the car in '74. I'm thinking that even if I sold it (ain't gonna happen ~ I'm being buried in it) the plates would stay with the car. In your case, your truck never had yellow/black plates on it (or any California plates for that matter). Easiest way to find out would be to check with DMV (be prepared to deal with a fair amount of brain-dead Gov't workers who don't know what you can/can't legally run in Cali though).

Now YoM (Year of Manufacture) is an entirely different story. In that case you'd find yourself a pair of 1938 plates that clear DMV and then, for a nominal annual fee, you can run those.

  6. I've got a matching pair of 56 CA plates in my collection. What's a ballpark value on those in good condition ? Just curious. I don't sell my junk.
