Yeah, I could throw them on the wall, but I'd enjoy them a lot more on the car. Besides, do you always do what people tell you to do??
if the model A with 51 plates was always registered and never allowed to lapse into oblivion since 1951 it would have had 63 plates with the black /yellow letters when you found it. I'm pretty sure all cars got new plates in 56, and then for sure all California cars got new plates again in 63. the 63's are still in use provided the car never went out of the system. I got em on my 61 dodge. when it was new it had yellow background 56 plates I would not **** around with license plates. you can be pulled over and then ****ed with for who knows what violations your car has... or whatever violations you have for that matter. your expensive plates can be confi****ed on the spot. your car could be towed and impounded. my buddy had an oval shaped German plate on the front of his VW notchback and a cop gave him all sorts of **** and took his plate. car was legally registered and had the proper plate on the back and the other in the glovebox. you can buy 3 sets of 31 plates for what you will get for a nice set of DMV clear 51's. I'd sell them and do that. also be careful buying old plates that were already used in the YOM program. there may be problems using them since the numbers were recently in the system.
My 56 F100 has the yellow on black (63?) plates. I suppose I could get the black on yellow 56 plates but it's my opinion (I don't know why) the yellow on black plates are the best looking California plates ever....Just my 2 cents.
Welp, my persistance was rewarded today with an envelope from the DMV with my new registration for my 31. It took almost 4 months, but it's done. f To all those that supported my quest, believe me when I say it's sweet for the little guy to win one once in a while. All the others should just give up when told to do so....
Good job 55 Post! I'm glad it worked out for you. I knew you would prevail if you persisted! To all of you that believe that "THE DMV WILL WIN" well you are letting them win! The DMV works for us. Dont let them off the hook.
Yep, 51 plates on my 31!! The last time it was registered was 1953. The original ***le and reg card had the 51 plate number on them. 1st, they told me that it couldn't be done because the info was out of the system and it needed new plates. 2nd, they wanted to do YOM until they found out the car was a 31 and the plate was a 51. 3rd, I told them it was simple plate retention. Simply register the car with the last plate that was issued to the vehicle. Obviously, this couldn't of happened if the plate was in use, but it wasn't. Thanks BAD ROD.
I bought a 63' Rambler for my girlfriend a year ago and I am still having problems getting a ***le from California. The guy I bought it from lost the ***le and we are trying to get a new one. They keep sending us a bill as if we live in the state for fees over due on re***ling it in Ca. I keep sending them a letter stating the car is not in Ca.!! But do they listen? NO! I still have a car sitting in my driveway awaiting its ***le..........
if it was the last plate it had and it was clear, then you deserve to have it registered with the '51 plate. me i'm still waiting, they sent me the paperwork back because the tard at the dmv forgot to fill in his stuff on the yom paperwork (his #, the office # and if the plates where real.....). so i went back in thursday and had them fill it out and ask if there was going to be anymore surprises. the plate #'s are on hold for me they took my white plates and gave me tags, but i'm still waiting for approval from the main hub.....so 2 months down the tubes for simple registration/***ling .
It sounds like the previous owner(s) have some outstanding fees due on that vehicle and DMV won't do anything untill it's settled... The outstanding fees would be on the vehicle, not the owner, they don't care where the vehicle is.
It is the DMV, your point is? They will do what they want, and we will just be happy we get to drive our cars. chuck
already paid the back fee's, i called the main office after a month, they said there was a problem with the paperwork (but couldn't tell me what) and they were sending it back to me. after another week i recieved it in the mail and the local dmv forgot to fill it out completely. so now it has to go back through the system and another 4-6 weeks.......isn't it thier JOB to know all the paperwork.....that's like someone working at a bank and not knowing how to count money.
in the end we all get shafted with them especially with our gross polluting gas hogs that most of the time aren't street legal. **** em
not bitter at all just amazed! after reading about all the ******** the dmv in california puts someone through and their is a loophole that comes up. you guys in cal. better make a note of this. in wa. they make no exceptions, yom or new vintage plate and their database drops out past 10 years. the worst thing that can happen is a 3 year bonded ***le which still allows the car to be sold but the new owner has to wait the 3 years.
55 dude, this is not a DMV "loophole". It is the policy of the California DMV plain and simple. A lot of the problems you hear about with the California DMV stems from the lack of DMV personnel knowing how or even wanting to help us customers. That, and the lack of understanding on our parts on how to ask the right questions. I am not defending our DMV. I hate to deal with them as much as the next guy. But I always approach them with respect and as if they work for me. Mike
