California. Take 15 minutes and contact your representatives. This is your best chance, and may be your only chance. Do the right thing.

I don't mean to introduce controversy, but something to keep in mind when dealing with some streams within the environmental movement is that there is a very strong belief in the efficacy of "car culture", the notion that the fact that people like cars is a determining factor in their choice of transportation. Therefore, they believe that if cars are forced by law to be dreary and unimaginitive people would use other modes of transport instead.

I believe that this idea is fundamentally erroneous. I believe that people choose their transportation mainly on the shape of the city or environment in which they live. People who hate cars drive as much as anyone else in LA because that is how the city works (most of Cape Town isn't any better). It isn't really viable to get around in any other way. If public transport (or, better, walking) were really convenient, even the most vehement motor enthusiast would get around that way most of the time, but it isn't. And the reason it isn't lies in a bulk of planning codes that prevents small property owners from making the best use of their property, not in "car culture". The codes result in a spread-out, compartmented city where what you want isn't likely to be where you are.

By contrast I can imagine an ideal city where people actually drive very seldom, but because cars therefore do not constitute a problem the enthusiasts in that city can be free to own, build, and drive whatever vehicles they want. Indeed, hot-rodders would be much better able than a big-business motor industry to deal with the resulting low-demand scenario!

There is something hypocritical in demanding strict control of vehicle specifications and not demanding the abolition of land-use zoning, building set-backs, etc., especially as applicable to home-owners, which now results in the urban scenario that creates the need for vehicle use at current levels.

We want environmentalists to start thinking in terms of urban form. Some already are, but often in an unfortunate authoritarian way because they can't see how it really works. They won't see it before they get over the error of "car culture". It's a mental block with them. Take every opportunity to convince them otherwise.

For all the griping and bashing on the HAMB about California, I'm hoping that thousands on here responded to this. It is much easier to spend a couple of minutes doing this now, than to whine about your inability to register or title your vehicle in the future. Please consider the consequences. YOU CAN do something very honorable, and help to keep hotrodding alive in this country. Please step up...this is important for everyone.

  12. Good luck to all the Californians. I read the bill that required the 350 chevy conversion. It's sure not for everybody.

I could type a twelve page rant about how the politicos on the left coast seem to start shit that spreads all across this great country, but Ryan would most likely delete the thread! So I'll just bump this back to page one, and urge all yall in Kalifornia to do your thang!
