So after recently relocating to SoCal, my Utah plates expire this month. Time to bite the bullet and get some black plates. Couple questions...

Are the plates model specific thru the 60s? If so, do they require vintage plates be specific too? Other than clear digits, any other hoops I should plan on jumping through??

If it's a truck you must get "commercial plates" not year specific in the 60's they were using stickers by then AFAIK .

Yes commercial plates are needed. If your truck is 1962 or earlier you need the yellow california 1956 license plates with a 1962 sticker on it. If its 1963 and up you need the black plates. I suggest finding your correct plates, make sure they are Dmv clear and when u register your truck you should print out Dmv form 352..year of manufacturer (YOM) form from the Ca Dmv website. Its 1 page. And make an apt with Dmv and handle it. You shouldn't have a problem. If for some reason they want u to register your truck with new CA plates do not give up the Vintage plates. Onky your other state ones. Then fill out form 352. I know some guys who had Dmv people trying to have them turn in old plates for new. Don't give them up!

Thanks for the advice. Those legacy plates still haven't reached their quota?? It's tempting, but my pickup needs originals. I have tried my best to keep everything 60s period correct. Hopefully commercials are cheaper than p***enger plates.

You will also need a correct year of MANUFACTURE sticker. There are some approved reproductions or vintage ones are also out there. I got a 64 sticker off eBay. It does need to be the year of manufacture, not the original sticker that would be one year newer.

If I have a '64 pickup, gotta have two DMV clear commercial plates as well as a '64 sticker? Holy ****. Honestly, they make this way too hard!

  8. And with commercial plates you may have to weigh it.

And there's an annual vanity plates fee.

And you might not need commercial plates.

64 u need the black plates with yellow letter that has a 63 scribed in the top right. You won't need a sticker for those plates. That only 1956-1962. U need 2 matching plates. Commercial plates are more expensive usually than standard. You coukd always take off your bumoers and bed and anything else to lower your truck weight, get it weighed and have it show its lower than commercial weight and then u can get regular plates. I doubt u are hauling stuff with this truck so u may wanna go that route. If u have a large truck with standard plates you are not allowed to have heavy thing in the bed or u could get a ticket for that. So it makes sense for a show truck to have standard plates. I think commercial plates look good on trucks. Cause ya know..they are meant only for them

  10. johnny, I disagree that he doesn't need a sticker. I'm going through this with the DMV right now ***igning black plates to my '64 vette and they are requiring a sticker. I have two matching, clear black plates and found a '64 sticker for $40 at the Pleasanton swap meet.

I just registered my out of state truck and got YOM plates.

    1) If your out of state ***le shows vehicle weight and it's under 6,000 lbs. you do not have to have it weighed. My ****wipe DMV clerk didn't know this, made me leave empty handed (and empty wallet). I had to come back home, print out the DMV info below and stick it in his face. Time wasted: 2hrs.

    http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/brochures/howto/htvr9.htm

Trucks or pickups with an unladen weight of 6,000 pounds or less where the empty, unladen, scale, or tare weight is indicated on an out-of-state certificate of ***le or registration, and the vehicle has not been modified to change the weight.

    2. I was able to use non-commercial plates, as I had heard that due to the scarcity of old commercial plates they would accept non-commercial for some years (mine is 1938). I called the DMV special services in Sacto (916) 657-8035 and verified before I bought the plates. They were $75 as opposed to $250-$500 for commercial. I don't know about '60s plates, call them first.

Also, they have tightened up the rules for cl***ifying pickups as non-commercial. No more temporary camper shell, etc.. My truck is still registered commercial, just the plates are not.

I have the original 65 sticker on my Pontiac, but it was buried under 40 years of other stickers. The plates were registered with 2006 stickers on it and they didnt demad to see a 1965 tab. Only after it was registered did I s****e away all the **** to find the original stickers under it. I made a metal tab for the top left side of my plate to hold the newer month/year stickers and kept the original 65 sticker showing. I guess it all comes down to who helps u at Dmv/aaa and what they wanna see.
Getting a 64 sticker would look cool on ur old plates like it does mine

The DMV doesn't want the original sticker. They want the year of manufacture sticker. My 64 Mercury had original plates with the original 65 sticker but since it had not been registered for years and it was out of the system, I had to get a 64 sticker. I peeled all the stickers too only to find I had wasted my time and hundreds of dollars of vintage stickers.

Just got a '64 sticker and sourced non commercial plates. I'm going armed with all this info and hopefully goes smoothly. It really does depend on who's behind the counter.
