For those of you who have recently done the YOM application here in California, I have a question for you. Do they still take a xerox of your plate for the application? I did my application for it just last week and they did not. I asked the lady if she needed one, but she insisted she didn't. Any insight?
theyve never asked me for a xerox copy, but Ive always just taken them in with me, they inspect them and give me temporary tags..
I have done about 15 cars / bikes and have always had to present plates. Most recently they laid a magnet on both of them to ***ure they were not aluminum. May depend on the DMV office.
Did mine like 6 7 years ago so maybe this info is no good. But my experance was just as you two describe. It took Sacramento almost 2 + month to give the final all clear. That's when you finally know your done.
I did mine about 4 months ago. Took the plates for inspection and they p***ed. Maybe they made their own xerox.
I've always taken my plates to Tony's DMV service in Monrovia, CA plus everything else I need the DMV for. I don't have the number off the top of my head but the last 2 YOM plates I have done I have gotten a temp sticker and then my YOM stickers within a week. Worth every penny to have them handle it for me. NAES
Took my plates in about 18 months ago- verified color & text style from a catalog & made copies of them.
Just did a set of 40 plates--they looked at them and gave them back with a temp registration--tags came in two weeks
Got them for my '40 last August. Took photocopies and my money and then Sacramento asked for more money which I mailed and got my stickers by return mail. The whole thing was pretty easy except for the delay due to the more $$$.
I have now added a poll to make this a little more visual. And excuse me for my spelling error, plate! I meant plate!
Strange that since YOM plate applications are meant to be only through DMV HQ in Sacramenti. Even AAA cannot do YOM plates....
I did mine late in 2010. They inspected my plates, took my completed form, and my money. They also photocopied the plates and sent the photocopies to Sacramento. According to my research on the procedure, this is exactly what they were supposed to do.
Yes, made copies. Also, the process took me 9 months to get the tags etc. and my new pink. Very painful process but worth it when you get to run the plates.
Never had photo copies made. Had plates verified as in "non altered" IE=not painted. Had to mention the book a couple of times as per years and colors for specific plates. I did bring my numbers matching metal tags=50 on a 47 plate, correct colors, numbers were recorded, stickers and new reg sent from Sac within 2 weeks.it's a **** shoot now a days, and depends on the experience of the "clerk".
They are all former DMV employees who do all the footwork for you, submit the paperwork correctly and make sure you get what you need the first time and that it's all OK by DMV. Here's the contact info for anyone in SoCal who is interested. (626)447-2450
1. The above post is correct, the time it takes in Sacramento varies on how busy they are, most of the time two to three months. 2. My buddy takes his YOM plates to a small DMV and they process them on the spot. I guess he's just lucky they do it that way, there just taking the easy way out. 3. Little known fact - Say you have a '47 plate and it's going on a '50's car. Once a '47 plate is ***igned to a '50 that plate will always be a '50 plate now, the plate can only be used on a '50 auto. You can never change the plate back and used it on a '47 car. Sounds strange, I know but it's the law. CRUISER
^^^^ above is correct. 51 came out with a new color,so it's 47 plates if you want them up to 50 with the coresponding year tag.
They Xeroxed mine. And, as an added bonus, I was allowed to put Black and Yellow 1963 plates on my 1962, with a 1962 sticker on the 1963 plates. All depends on who you get and how you act...or luck.... this was last year, 2011.
