Projects Calling all SHOEBOX GURUS.............

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by holliwood, Feb 17, 2010.

  1. Hey fellas, I just picked up a '50 Shoebox on Monday for my new project, and I have some questions seeing that I don't know much about old Fords  I'm getting ready to bag it, but I'm not sure what's the best way to go about the front suspension setup. After looking at the stock setup, I'm not real sure about using it or not, so I'm wondering what some of you guys have used on your car? I already have a complete s10 suspension that's already 2-linked with rear bag mounts that I can use as an option, but if I go that route, I'll do a complete chassis restore which will take awhile, and I want this thing at least lowered for Roundup. Any ideas? Thanks.....

  2. You dont really want to half ass it with the stock front suspension, just to have it ready for the round up. Figure if you got the S-10 set up than clip it with that and do it right this time around so you that can bag it correctly and enjoy it for years to come, rather than just fixing it another day. If you're looking for just a quick lowering up front that will ride nice, 1990 ford Aerostar springs. Lots of info from other guys on those

  3. Yeah, that's really what I was talking about for the Roundup; just a little modification to get it about 4 inches lower for now. About the spring idea; I noticed there is only about 2-3 of clearance between the bottom control arm and the frame pocket. I would think putting springs that drop it, will bring those together too much and they would hit when I hit a bump.......Do the Aerostar springs cause that to happen? How much do they drop the front?

Check out Gambino's bag kit for the shoeboxes or look into Jamco springs. They have complete lowering systems.

  5. They will not. You're looking at about 2.5-3 inches lower

I sub framed my 51 with an s 10 and it worked good simple with disk brakes and you can bag it with a kit. I couldnt get the look and ride with the original setup

If you can get 2.5-3 inches with aerostar coils, you could get dropped uprights or step the lower control arms for another 2 inches. It would be pretty hammered.

  11. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. 5'' in the front is pretty damn low for a static drop.

Tinman, are those coils from the front or rear of the Aerostar?

Moog CC850 is the number for the coils. You could also flip the uprights for a couple more inches.

  14. Yeah, I think I'm gonna go ahead and flip them; now I'm just trying to decide whether to put the coils on it or step the lowers.
