The casting date code on the back of the block will tell you what year it is, that's pretty helpful if you really want to know what you have.

Bought a motor out of a s**** yard once... I asked for a 350 4-bbl motor out of a '70 Chevy or GMC pickup.... When I tore it down, it had 4-bolt mains and a steel crank..... The block needed a .030" over bore job... No biggie, I had it done and the folks at the shop set me up with a set of TRW L2304 pistons.... Once I completed the block ***embly, I bolted on a set of "186" casting heads and Z/28 intake that my brother in law gave me.... That motor ran like a ****d ape....

So do you think this is a 305 ?
My buddy didn't undertand the casting date question evidently so this is all I have, which points to a 262 or a 305.
I think it all points to a 305ci., he was told the engine was a Jegs crate motor when he bought the car but with 8.57 times it's got to be a 305 or that 262...lol
