Hey guys, I had a flat tappet cam go flat on me in a 327 that was freshly rebuilt, It has a comp cam 280h-10 installed that the engine builder selected. I’m looking for a cam similar to that but in a roller. Any help would much be appreciated.
Write down the lift, duration and LSA and any other specs and look at the Comp Cams website and find a retrofit hydraulic roller grind that matches what you have. Hold on to your wallet because you'll be looking at about $1200 for the cam and lifters for a retrofit roller.
That is part of Comps 'Magnum' line of camshafts. Good Stick. Swap to roller can be expensive and often involves block modification if you have the non roller block. The magnum 224/230s advertised fall a little in between. Be cautious of Piston to Valve clearances with the cam change. Figure out why the cam failed?
I Pretty much have everything to do it except for the cam. I can’t decide what to get . I want something that I can drive around town and still get decent drive ability , Nothing to wild
the specs are very close to what I just put in my mild 327, but it has more lift, which you'd expect with a roller. Just make sure to check everything that needs to be checked before you try to fire it up.
Poor quality materials, improper machining (lobe taper, lifter convex) incorrect hardness of either components, sometimes excessive lifter bore clearance that prevent even minimal lifter rotation, especially in 50 year old blocks. .002" is absolutely the max. Break In oil can help initially, not some witches brew of additives and oil. Call Jones Cams for some help, look 'em up. The old reliables are not anymore.
I used a Summit 1065 flat hydraulic, it is still working after 800 miles. Nothing special done at all, just put it together like a stocker. Fresh built engine. I used the old fashioned method of lube, Sta Lube Moly grease on the lobes and lifters. Not that thin new stuff they give you for it. But I also used an old set of new lifters from the 1980s which is kind of hard to find these days
40 years ago you could buy a Erson or GK cam and lifters, dump in a can of GM EOS and "break-in" the deal with a burn out. All that stuff was made in USA. Now you have to be careful and lucky. Do some research on the problem that has been around for 20 years. Other than the engines many are using are much older and worn, ( lifter clearance) it is component quality that's the problem.
I think your NOS lifters are the key to your success. I'm not taking any chances, I'm gonna pony up for the roller.
Erson cams were my go to cam for years. I even tracked down a HiFlo2M for my 360 AMC motor we autocross. Never had lifter problems with any of them.
I like NOS lifters, if not rusted, buy in person at swap meet or auction, some evil doers are tossing "white box " junk in old boxes on the interwebs, so be careful, most of the" real stuff" is already gone, so it's best to go roller, or pay up for quality.
