I'm looking for advice on which hydraulic, flat tappet camshaft for my engine build. I'm using Vortec heads (062 casting) on a small block chevy 383 stroker mild street. It's going in a 1949 Ford shoebox.

Typically, the max lift of stock Vortec heads is about .470 but I'm going to be putting on beehive springs to replace the stock springs. These springs increase the amount of available valve lift from 0.450 to 0.550 inch with no machining required.

Apparently, these heads have good flow on the intake side but not the exhaust. So they need a higher exhaust duration and lift. Which means an asymmetrical cam. So far, the most popular cam seems to be the Comp Cams XE262

I'm using 1.6:1 ratio, self aligning rocker arms.

The transmission is a th350 nothing special done to it. The rear gear ratio in the diff is 3.5:1.

And I'm always willing to pay more for something that's made in America.
    I appreciate any advice.

That's my favorite cam for a mild SBC.

  3. The only thing I'll add is look into a higher stall converter for the TH350.

I like the comp thumper or motha thumper series get that bumpy idle without moving you power range up into higher rpm's since strokers are done making good power around 5000 rpm'ss so. Also if your going to run a high lift cam you need to put screw In Rocker studs and defiantly long slot rocker arms.... My 63 impala has a pretty warm 327 cam is .512 I pealed the bottoms off a few rocker arms right off the bat then shortly after pulled two studs out needless to say if has long slot 1.6 rockers n screw in studs now

  5. I was talked out of the Thumpr cams by Comp when I called them. They steered me to the XE268H cam which has better street manners. I selected a Lunati cam that was comparable to the XE cam.

I would take a look at the lunati voodoo 268 cam. I ran it in an OT 68 corvette with a 327. That 327 was nothing too out of the norm and pretty mild (461 casting heads, 670 Holley, edelbrock intake, 9.5:1 compression, ram horn exhaust). It sounded great, ran strong, and was dead reliable. Below us a link to a you tube video of the exhaust note at idle. It was cold out and idle is high but you get the picture.

  8. I got the Lunati 276/268 for my build, have yet to start it though. Like the sound in the Vette.

I hope your combo doesn't include flat topped pistons a 4 eyebrow piston .010 down in the hole and a .040 gasket will get you 10.5 compression on a 383.
