Your kidding, always turn the crank so both timing marks are at 12 o'clock

Yep, did that, then forgot my bud set the preload, and I forgot I had already put the timing chain cover back on. I could **** up a wet dream man! That's alright, I'll finish up tonight in the driveway when it's supposed to be "102 DAMN DEGREES!"

At least you're smarter than me about it .. I was pulling a SB mopar intake, unbolted it, wouldn't come off, thought it was just glued down too tight so I hooked the engine hoist up to it, lifted until the suspension unweighted, still stuck, finally realized the valve covers were lapped over the edge of the intake holding it down.

I have a pair of visegrips with a washer welded on the handle in an attempt to remove a piece of **** Mr.Gasket fuel pump rod that had bent/mushroomed up in there...eventually went to an electric pump. Wasn't all that uncommon to find them stuck in place or bent.

I'm only refering to where the cam should be in relation to the the crank when dropping in the distributor, not cam install position. 6 12 is TDC exhaust stroke and 12 12 is TDC compression stroke.

I thought I would p*** along something else I ran into a while back that I had never seen. I tore down a 351 Ford roller cam motor and the cam would not budge. All the bolts, lifters, etc were out and I have removed a thousand cams in my life and they always slipped right out.

Come to find out there was a ridge of varnish that had built up on the journals and it was acting as a lip to keep the cam from slipping out of the bearings. I made a puller with a long bolt and some flat stock so I could crank down on the bolt and it pulled the cam past that lip and then it came right out.

Just thought I would p*** that along in case someone else ever runs into that situation.

Really doesn't matter whether it's 6 and 12 or 12 and 12, just so you know if it's TDC compression, or exhaust. Most timing chain sets don't even come with instructions anymore to tell you 6 or 12.

I think you missed the point of what I'm refering to. I'm not refering to putting the timing set on at all at this point of the conversation. Just pointing out where the marks should be for dropping in the distributor.

I know a guy who took all of his bolts off inside the rocker area on his sbc heads, and then used a prybar to try to pry the heads off "cause they were stuck" and then realized that there are those little bolts on the bottom of the head paitned orange like the head and block....
I "in my youth" bolted my tourque converter to the flexplate and then shoved that into the ****** and could not fugure out why the motor would not turn over....one fried frotn pump later....

12 12 is for Dizzy and 12 6 is for Timing Set install. Make since now. Remember, the cam is 2 to 1 with the crank.

Now I wish I never brought it up. But I brought it up because so many people seem to think because the two dots lined up means thats where the engines crank position should be when dropping in the distributor. Sure the #1 piston is at TDC, but the cam is 180* off if you try dropping the distributor in per factory position or any position for that matter. Your rotor will be 180* off of how you put your plug wires.

Thanks Johnny Gee, now I see why for the second time in a row I ended up re installing the
dizzy because it's back firing through the carb. I was dropping at 12/6.
105 degrees outside right now-I'm going to git to it after supper!!!

Just don't forget to put the fuel pump pushrod back in......

I've never forgotten to take one out.....but did forget to put one back in....got everything ****oned up.....attempted to fire it.....and tried again.....and again.....

After beating my head against the wall....everything I was checking was working.....but the damn carb wasn't getting fuel, but the fuel pump worked when I took it out....

As I was about to strap a pound of C4 to the engine I walked by the bench.....sitting on top of a greasy rag was a steel rod....took me a minute to realize what it was.....and another minute to realize what I forgot....needless to say I felt pretty dumb
