Has anyone done it? I was under the impression that someone makes an adapter for it but I'm not sure. I'm ***uming I'll need a master, slave, line, etc. I've never messed with a GM stick before but I'm thinking with all the money I have into my motor that I'd be stupid to leave the non-overdrive 3 speed on the column in it.
No one? I need another trans option and I'd rather figure it out before I put the rest of the car together and get it in paint.
Why not use an overdrive from a 1949-56 Ford? It would bolt right in and they are all the same length so no mods required. Here is one for sale from a '53,call Ed at (517)463-5185 $200
Thanks guys. So Jeff, do you know what I would need for the overdrive unit? Is it just the floor switch and the cable? I wanted to do that originally but I had a hard time finding one. I swear you find every possible part for sale for our cars on the internet!
Jeff's right. The factory overdrive would drop right in. But... I think I'm with you on the T5. For me, the extra work would be well worth it in terms of driving fun and the "cool factor" of running an unusual drivetrain combo. Just my $.02
If you give Ed a call see if He has the switch and cable, also I ran across a kit (saw it on ebay) under $50 that will allow you to engage the overdrive from a switch on the dash. You may have to do some Google search to find it.
I'm definitely going to get in touch with him this weekend. I think the overdrive will be good for now until I know 100% what it will take to adapt the t5 into my car. I really like the idea of having the T5, I just have to read through all of flat ernie's posts to make sure I get everything right.
Personally I am with Jeff and the 3 speed w/overdrive . By the time you buy an adapter for $300+ and build a cross member for the trans and a new or used drive shaft , it will be a heck of a lot cheaper and easier to go with the older 3 speed w/overdrive . As for the Overdrive engage , you can buy them for a cable or foot control . I prefer the cable myself . Just my opinion . Jim
My dad's 55 Mainline is a six with a factory overdrive, and it is an absolute dream to drive. At highway speeds, it's responsive and still gets great mileage.
