Slow news day here at The Jalopy Journal, but we just got word of a new American Jet car in the works. It came with a one-liner: “The sound barrier is for fairies!” This coming from a country that ripped the shit out of Andy Green for driving a Jet Car.....btw ,what difference does the nationality play in getting the record.....seems some folks just love to hate.......Can't wait for Andys latest project , pity he has to go to your backyard to do it but hey it all adds to the fun. http://www.bloodhoundssc.com
Not trying to tarnish or diminish any accomplishments that SMC did but Craig Breedlove a hot rodder was honing his skills behind the wheel of a 34 coupe that he acquired when he was 13 years old.. The photo below is Craig at Bonneville in 1959,,he was 22 years old at the time of the photograph. HRP
As much of a fan of Breedlove that I am, he can not be called "Sir" if knighted. The correct title would be Craig Breedlove, SBI (Subject, British Empire).
This is an interesting Topic, different styles of car , great achievements by those involved but lets not be disrespectful to the drivers or the mascots that rode with them.
31st December 1964 Donald Campbell broke the World Water Speed record at Dumbleyung Lake Perth Western Australia with a speed of 276.33mph. He held both speed records in the one year.only man to do it ? The little town is holding celebrations this year (50 years)
It all started in France with Electric powered cars, then in 1902 an American with a gas powered car built in France really changed things. Bob http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_speed_record#History
This might be Off Topic but its worth a look regarding speed records ,,Aussie Ken Warby built this boat in his shed at home using a used Canberra Bomber engine ,,record run on the Blowering Dam still not been broken,,,,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezl8Yb8idyY
The Andy Green thing is still happening in South Africa? Last I saw, Bonneville can't handle the physical parameters of his attempt. If the more ignorant/ arrogant/ uneducated posters pulled your heads out of your arses you might enjoy discovering the might of the Sir Malcolm Campbell Record adventure on Lake Eyre.
