yep, so if you don't like the six, you get more power and less weight with a SBC.

Dont let these guys get to ya man. You had a valid question and I will say that while yes these trucks did have a V8 option unless you use those weak front mounts you will have to make or buy some that will have to be welded or bolted to the frame on the sides of the motor, wich if not done well can be an issue. The frame is strong enough for sure but if you have poorly installed mounts you could have issues at that point. When I was in high school my dad made some mounts for a 302 in his 59 ford pickup they did end up cracking the frame due to poor design on the mounts. one side cracked and broke and ended up starting a little crack in the frame. Just spend a little time in mount selection and installation and you will be fine. If you go that route.

  4. Too much what? ... If you already knew, why ask the question. I mean I can appreciate not having a clue and wanting to learn, but some things should just be common sense.

I'd also bet money you can buy ready to use conversion mounts for side-mount blocks, at that, if that's how you want to go, right out of somebody's catalog or off their website. You know, if you don't want to use that "weak" front mount that they still used even on great big trucks with the same engine.

I'm cool with the question, don't let the others discourage you. It's a tough choice deciding to go with an 8 since so much needs to be changed. A simple engine swap will need a different ****** and reared and the money spent starts to add up.

Not necessarily. Chevy used the same transmissions and rearend with the six and the V8 in 57 chevy trucks.

I just did an engine swap in a 57 chevy one ton, removed the old 283 and put in a big block, left the transmission and rearend alone.

My 57 Chevy truck still has the six, with a 4 speed (granny gear) and the 4:11 rearend. Can you really use this combination with a big block? The transmission even holds the six back, I cannot image my ****** with a big block in front. What ****** and rearend does the 283 come with?

Most of them came with 3.90 gears. I put 4.56 gears behind the 396 in my 59 truck 30 years ago.....
