If you have a 5 gallon gas can or a bucket, take the fuel line off the carb, add a rubber hose to get to the bucket. Turn on the pump and run 5 gallons out and see if the pump and lines work. Gary

I had that problem a while back on a truck I owned...
Changed fuel filter, checked gas and so on...all was good...finally found a second fuel filter down under the engine that was not very visible...changed that and walllaaaa....never a problem again...
The filter would plug, and the truck would spit and sputter then quit...leave it sit for a spell and it would fire right up, as the crap in the old style filter would settle to the bottom, and be OK for a while...
Sounds like it could be a fuel filter problem to me..
    Good luck..
    Cheers.......

Sounds like and electrical problem with a wire getting caught in the clutch linkage. could be under the dash or under the car. take a good look, it's a free fix if you find something.

As others have said, try the coil and or condensor, you may be getting a weak or no spark. If nothing else, these are the cheap and easy items to replace. They usually fail when the car warms up.

    Do check for spark.

And as also previously mentioned, if that thing sat a while, the tank (and lines) are probably full of rust. If you want to inspect the tank, I believe there is a removable panel in the trunk that will give you easy access to the sender. You just might need to make a new gasket out of cork afterwards.

I just went thru the same issue with our Model A with a flathead. It quit completely, quick check showed no fuel pressure. Replaced the pump (20 year old electric) and it fired right up. Ran about 10 minutes and quit, again no fuel pressure. Decided it must be something else instead of a bad pump. Did everything I could think of, cleaned tank , lines, replaced filters, ect. No matter what I did, same issue, fire up, run 10 minutes and then no gas. I finally out of desperation replaced the pump again and been running perfect since. Seems the brand new pump I put on would get hot in a few minutes and quit pumping even though it sounded like it was pumping.
If you determine it's a fuel issue I'd check the filter(s), if the gas in them looks clean I'd try another pump, they can pump then quit in a few I found out.

  8. your problem sounds just like the problem i was fighting with my ford truck over the last few weeks everyone told me it HAD to be a fuel issue .....it wasnt

my solution was the wire that runs to the positive side of the coil went bad and allowed the coil to get way to hot after afew minutes of driving then the truck would start sputtering then die and it didnt want to restart until it cooled off when it was cold in the morning it fired up and ran just fine

i thought it was afuel issue cause thats the way it acted but any way i replaced the wire to the coil and installed a chrysler ballast resistor in the wire now it runs fine

i posted a thread about it trying to get the same help your wanting from the knoledge base here

below is alink to my thread with a better explination of what i went through with it

real easy way to check the coil when it quits take the coil off and shake it if it sounds like liquid inside it ,it is bad the dielectric grease inside turns to liquid

I'd bet money its junk in the gas tank, when it lurched it probably shook the gas in the tank enough to pull the crud out of the pick up...I had the same problem with mine about a week or 2 after I started driving it! Another way to check for this is to pull the line off up near the carb and blow compressed air back through the line (with the gas cap off) and it will push the shit back up into the tank, and it will start and run till it collects back down there! Are you running a clear fuel filter. I hate them but I ran 2 of them for a while to see what was coming out of the fuel tank. One before the electric pump, and one before the carb to protect both units. I did this till I had the tank cleaned and sealed, and knew it was clean! No problems since then...Knock on wood!

    Hello,

1st test: take off the fuel line & run the line into a milk jug or plastic clead bottle. Have the car in neutral & block the tires then have someone crank ot over to see how the gas is coming out and if it looks clean.

After hooking up fuel if pumping gas test is OK

2nd test, leave off gas cap & roll up a rag to put in gas filler tube. See how your test drive goes, I'd circle the house or let it idle for 15 minutes checking temp gauge so you do not overheat

If running OK take larger circles or blocks until your confidence builds up.

If you still have problems keeping it running you can try asy can with line directly to your carb. Before this invest in a fire extinquisher to have with you.

Feel free to call an old duffer, Bob 417-861-7988

So after putting two new fuel filters on, the issue was still there and was getting progressively worse. After replacing the filter right after the pump, we realized the pump wasn't even pumping enough to send fuel to the filter that was only a few inches away. Bought a new fuel pump and the problem was solved. There's still a small hiccup when you pump the gas pedal quickly, which should be able to be fixed by replacing the accelerator pump in the carb.

Thanks again for all the help. I really appreciate it!

What kind of fuel pump are you using. I have a holley red pump that was able to take apart clean and reassemble. They also sell a complete rebuild kit with new vanes, screen, and gasket. Mine was full of varnished gas stopping the faves from sliding.

If you are running an HEI check for a full 12 volts to the coil.
