I believe it’s a 32’-34’ Ford, but may be wrong. It has a 3 tooth steering sector. I also believe it had a 3 bolt flange for the frame, but was cut off and a 2 bolt flange braised in its place so it would fit a Model-A.
I want it rebuilt, but I don’t know which steering box it is, thanks.

  3. Early Fords had a electric switch at the bottom of the box that was rod activated. I dont see where this box does. The fill plug is in a odd place on the side. Most Fords had one on the top side. Im guessing its not a Ford, but may have been modified to fit one.

Looks like it was originally a cross steer box, note the fill cap on the side.

I'm thinking it was a cross steer box converted to side steer. unknown steering box.jpg

For sure, you can see where a flange was brazed back on by the sector shaft.

Two bolts holding the end plate on? I’m going to guess a 36 Ford.

If my guess is correct, I believe the trick was to use a right hand drive worm and sector to have a bottom throw pitman arm. Otherwise, the lefthand worm would require the pitman arm to face up for side steer

If its 36 ford, it would have a bearing on the sector shaft...one year only

I think all of your responses are possibilities. This is in a 30 Ford roadster rat rod. It had a 49 Olds 324 Rocket in it and barely cleared the steering box. I now have a sbc in it and it barely clears. There’s no question that the two bolt flange was brazed onto the sector shaft and probably came from a model a. It bolts in the same hole in the frame as a model a box. That appears to be fine. It steers well. I just need to know what it is so I can get a rebuild kit or have someone rebuild it. Thanks for your comments.

By the way, the pitman arm is straight up. Had to build a Z bar from the pitman arm to step down to the wheel steering arm. I need a bearing that goes in the two hole flange( the one that’s brazed on) that mounts to the frame. The steering sector goes through that bearing. Thanks
