The wheel covers in this photo are NOT the cheap, readily available "smoothie" hubcaps available practically everywhere. I have a set of those and they are nowhere near as DEEP as the ones on this car. Look how round the center is and how far it projects out from the sunk portion of the cap. I have never seen a set like this but would love to find a pair. Can anyone steer me in the right direction? If they are old/original, what brand and era? If they are new, who makes them like this?
Usually the deep covers were to cover 40-48 Ford rear ends.. The axles stuck out pretty far and the deep covers allowed for that...
Close, but no cigar. I want chrome or polished stainless, just like in the photo of the Chrysler coupe.
I don't think they are full caps. I think they are center caps over the chrome rings (could be OE, may be "chromesides") that simulate full caps. I found these photos (pretty sure this is the same car that you posted, the blue might be photoshopped). Look closely at the caps and you can see the line between the cap and the ring.
OH!! Yeah, I noticed that faint line in the photo I posted but I didn't realize it was a seam between a cap and a ring. I believe you are correct, Sancho. Thanks! I am already casually hunting for a set of those filler rings anyway. Pretty sure I saw and photographed that car in person years ago at Paso Robles, but at the time I was not as obsessed with wheel covers as I am now so I didn't look at them closely at the time. And I didn't realize it was the same car until you pointed it out. The photoshop color change fooled me, but it's obvious to me now.
Sancho, I had a set of full moons on my 51 2dr hardtop in 1962 when I was in high school. They had a groove in them. I think they were Cal Custom caps. Gary Glasgow said he had a pair at one time.
Tracy Ledford here (superbly gifted fabrication Rod/Custom builder, formerly with Richard Ruth) has some of these deep 'Moons'; they are NOT full wheel covers, but larger diameter than 'Baby Moons', 'Baldies', etc. Tracy says they are late '30s Cadillac, and some custom cap companies refitted some with adapting rings to fit other wheels, (Ford, Chevy, etc.) Interesting looking at some of the different adaptations. Tracy said they were available at Auto supply stores then, (American Auto, Eastern Auto, et al) I recalled seeing them on some Customs back then, in Santa Clara 1948-'56.
