I recently bought a late flattie. The story was it had been on a water pump at mine/refinery near SLC, Utah. That story checked out. The machinist was good enough to remove an aluminum tag from the rear of the block just below the deck for the intake, before bake cleaning the block. The tag has the Ford script and say Industrial Engine, made in the U.S.A. by Ford. The tag says, under "Type": *8RNN*2506A* The stars on the plate are 5 corner stars. The Serial No. is 39935. What can you tell me about this? Thanks.
Sounds like the real deal....Ford built a lot of non vehicle flatheads. The stars were always used in front of, and at the end of all I D numbers in order to prevent someone from adding digits to them. Engines, as well as vehicle I D # had these. 4TTRUK
Do you know if the "8" in the "Type" means year of manufacture, '48? Is there anything different about a Type 8RNN? The valve seats are perfect, does this thing have hardened seats? Thanks.
I think the 8RNN would show it as an industrial engine with the truck heads. 51 had hardened seats, 52-53did not. Butch
We had several Ford flathead V-8's driving fire pumps on our wild land fire apparatus. The engine was part of a package marketed by American-Marsh Fire Pumps from Battle Creek, MI. They were very dependable and were in our fleet for over 20 years. I see one fire engine in Loretto, BC we donated to them when I go sport fishing down there every year. Normbc9
I'd assume the 8 goes with 8ba, 8rt and 8cm which were 49-51 series, but that's my assumption. Mabey someone can enlighten me on this but i think the 8 in 8ba, ect stands for it being designed in '48 but im not sure of that
