The real threat to hot rodding is hot rodders that roll over when they are confronted. To me, for me, there is no tangable threat. It's just a lot of noise. Yes, I make noise too, regarding the nanny society syndrome, but that's just to voice my dislike for that. Realisticly, I feel no tangable threat to what I do. Whatever the obstacle, I'm smart enough, whether it's to make a detour or to meet the problem head-on; to accomodate/react/innovate to any threat, by reacting in kind.

So... What's the reason for the tone with me? The rolled eyes, accusations, etc... Are you looking for my lead or something?

Most big time politicians start as small time politicians and like to work the small town parades and fairs. Volunteer your old car and services to tool them around. Make friends and show them that we are part of THEIR WORLD. Just like the local beauty queen a politician likes being seen in an old Cadillac convertable waving to the crowd.

That works both ways......the Germans were very good at manipulating the masses into thinking "their" way......millions of innocent people were murdered due to the lack of anyone thinking for themselves. Stirring up the ignorant into a frenzy is very easy....remember how people were going to wrap their houses with plastic and duct tape after 9-11? Now how stupid is that? Yet, some "geniuses" did it.

by the way...some keen-eyed HAMBer made this connection a few days ago......
on the left, a Magazine from 1984, on the right, 2010.........

    get my point?

Again....................get off the internet and do something...why does everyone always wait for someone else to do it?
    Go............YOU lead the way........

    Awesome...^ ^ ^

Never forget; The goal of a magazine, is to sell magazines.
I'm sure some folks thought this one out LONG and HARD...

    it's not a coincidence...

Remember, people get paid well to put their finger right on the pulse of what's going on: and exploit it.

    Hmmm.....1984, ehh?

    QUOTE:
Actually, the purpose of the 'retro-fit kits' that were forced on owners of older cars at the time, (along with EGR, lower compression ratios, retarded ignition timing and other mods adopted by the manufacturers of new cars) was to lower the temperature of combustion - not raise it - which decreases, not increases, the production of nitrogen oxides. But lowering the combustion temperature also decreases the thermal efficiency of an engine, causing an increase in the amount of unburned hydrocarbons that are emitted and lowering
both fuel mileage and power output. Despite increasing unburned hydrocarbon emissions
and causing more - not less - fuel to be burned overall, the politicians in their
all-knowing brilliance and wonderfulness targeted nitrogen oxides as the number
one 'smog enemy', even though nitrogen oxide actually occurs naturally in the
atmosphere and is primarilly caused by ultraviolet radiation from the sun reacting
with nitrogen (at 78% , nitrogen is the main component of air) and oxygen (which
    makes about 20.9% of air).

    Mart, You are right on.

This is a good example of how Social Engineering by people who do not have a clue what they are doing will always have unforeseen consequences.

When California passed the Nox laws in the 70 I took a 1965 Ford Puckup to have the Nox device installed by the Certified Smog Station.

The man plugged the vacuum advance and retarded the distributor on the stock 352 cubic inch V8 engine.

After I payed him and commented about how it was a lot of bullshit to have to have it done to register the truck he agreed and handed a piece of pre cut vacuum hose he took out of a box next to the cash register.

He then suggested that after I drove the truck a mile or 2 to see what the State Required Modification did to performance and to see what the exhaust smelled like, that I should take off the rubber caps on the cut metal vacuum tube and install the rubber hose.

He pointed out that the truck would then run ok but that if I wanted it to run well that I should advance the distributor untill when I lugged it in second gear it just started to ping.

I did what he suggested and the truck ran better than it had before I brought it to him to have it modified.

He also asked that I not advertise that he had helped me as he would lose his Smog licence.

I also noticed that while the "Device" (2 rubber stoppers) and the spark retard were working the exhaust smell at the rear of the truck would cause a maggot to puke.

After removing the "Device" the 110,000 mile truck exhaust was clean and hardly noticable.

Have you ever wondered who benifits from these ordinances, codes or laws.

Could they be contributors to the political campain funds those who pass these things?

Out side storage, Storage building suppliers and storage rental people?

Asbestos Laws, Asbestos removal companies took Billions of dollars out of the schools budgets to remove the asbestos from the classrooms.

I tell people, tongue in cheek, that I am so glad that they did that because when I went to school kids were falling out of their desks dead on a regular bassis as a result of that deadly asbestos in the ceiling tiles.

I wonder if helmet makers had anything to do with the bicycle helmet laws.

There again I tell people that as a kid I lost a lot of friends because they rode their bicycles without helmets.

Whole new industries pop up as a result of these laws regardless of the costs in lost jobs and businesses.

Often for each new job created by edict 100 are lost.

To save a fish thousands lose their farms.

The Central Valley of California is about 50 miles wide and 450 miles long and is the most productive farmland in the world.

I heard that the Federal Governments Air Polution Controll District recorded the air quality below their 1 hour standards 3 or 4 times this year and as a result they fined the district 200 million dollars.

The area is agricultural and sparsley populated.

Most of the smog is generated by trucking and car traffic thru the 2 major corridors that run the length of the valley.

The local population will have to pay the tax to cover the fine imposed by people that are not elected and caused by people who do not live there.

Of course. You put that upon yourself (weather you like it or not) when you created the monster known as the HAMB.

Well you are in a position to do something about it.

HAMB Action Network - fighting to keep our hobby alive would be good. A chapter with a sticky on the main discussion board to keep the HAMB community informed of threatening legislation which negatively impacts the hobby. Posts about where and who to contact. Kill the apathy and fight to preserve this wonderful hobby.

    from nowhere...

I don't know...I'm pretty sure asbestos takes more than a few minutes to kill ya...;) and, I personally consider it something of a requisite sacrifice, a toll, actually, to have a roof over my stuff, or at least most of it, so it can also be protected...I SERIOUSLY wreak havoc on my building budget by accounting for this, but, I can't see it being any other way, unless all possible avenues were lost, at which time, I imagine building cars would cease to even be a concern of mine anyway. So, ordinances be damned...they are obviously much more of a problem in areas of high "pretense", and wealth anyway, so, I'm glad I live in a farming community, because DAMN....talk about folks with shit all over their yard! lol...but, it's not urban, so, no one is shoved as far up each others ass as to really care too much.

That all could change, but, if it does, well...I'll leave.
Additionally, I make every effort to keep my yard orderly anyway...it looks better, To ME, too.

As far as pollution is concerned, well...

That is a whole other argument, but, around here classic or antique tags exempt you from that whole scam, for now, of course, but, I remember 15 years ago people saying that the sky was falling, then, saying I wouldn't be able to drive my car by NOW...and I still am...

Stay wary, but, really, if you are cunning, and creative, there is always a way...with risks, yes, but they are inherent in freedom anyway.

Find the loopholes...and fight when cornered.

You're registering "your" cars in your dad's name, right? You know what happens the first time you get pulled over with out-of-state (or in your case, country) plates and a CA driver's license, right? 90 days to register vehicle in CA or surrender license and get one from the registered state/country.

    I feel baited.

If you want me to become a politician, it won't happen. I have a very distinct emotional reaction to that word and the people that represent it. It's not a positive one.

I hate what politics do to people. I hate what politics do to this country.

I'm a libertarian... There, I said it. Happy now?

    ............

I also understand that running this joint comes with a certain responsibility. I do, in fact, take that responsibility seriously. Here's what I plan to do:

I'm meeting with a few fellas that are high up in SEMA. They are pitching me on the problems they see forthcoming. From that pitch, I plan to extrapolate the facts from the propaganda and make a decision on whether or not I want to be involved in any capacity.

What does that mean for the HAMB's involvement? I dunno... But I can tell you that this place will never focus on politics.

    ............

What frustrates me is people that sit around and wait for leadership. That's a cop out in my opinion. If you see a problem, go out and do something about it. This country wasn't built by followers. It was built by folks that didn't have any excuses.
