I am thinking of paining my 36 plymouth engine (later model flathead 6) black. The car is black too. Anyone else paint their engine black? Especially if your car is black too? Can I see pics?

    Thanks,

    Rebecca

Thanks. that helps even though it is a different engine style. I like it.

I always paint mine black. I think the aluminum and chrome show up better that way.

I guess you don't really see much of the engine, but:

I have always thought the same. I love the look of a black engine compartment/engine with just the polished/chrome accessories really standing out.

Yeah, I painted one black, it looked nice but it sure was tough to track down any oil leaks.

black painted engines disappate heat better,
and chrome is bad at holding in heat!!!!!
And do you know why some valve covers are finned??? its not to look pretty..........
    its for heat disappation.

I thought of that but I keep the engine clean and look at the drips on the ground I will be able to figure out where the leak is coming from.

Awesome! now that's what I'm talking about. Is that your Plymouth. Are those shiny bolts on your head or caps? If they are caps, where did you get them? that is the look that I am going for. Did you build the headers and intake? I was thinking of doing mine myself but I have never tried that before. I will install the old stuff initially to get it running but I was thinking that if all goes well that I would try and building custom stuff next winter.

Sorry but there's just not enough heat and air movement with automotive engines (especially street engines) for those theories to have any functional benefit. If you're driving a SR71 blackbird, different story.

Back to the original post, I think this one boils down to if you're an "engine person" or a "body person". Personally, I like engines, to me they're so integral to the car I need to know what they are before deciding if I like a car or not. Other people I know hate seeing cars displayed with the hood up, they don't need to know what's in there to decide if they like it or not.

If you're the hood closed type, a black engine is probably appealing. It de-emphasizes mechancial ugliness like the block's freeze plugs

If you're the hood open type, an engine should be accent colored so you can study it's beauty. Because the lumps and bumps and casting codes are beautiful to your eye. They're part of the machine.

So what kind of person are you? Acknowledge, accept, run with it and have a thick skin when those from the other camp disagree. :D

    Good luck with the project

  26. ANY paint of ANY color is an insulating layer.

Bare metal will dissipate heat better than one with an insulative coating.

OK, some colors may be "better" than others, but it really doesn't matter on a water cooled engine.

Paint it any color that makes it look sharp.

Most of mine are painted Dark Gray so you can still see the block in a black engine compartment but all of the aluminum components stand out. Not bright Orange/Blue/Red/or..... Pink....... Sometimes a deep purple / burgundy or dark green is impressive inside a black car.

    Only my thoughts.
