I grew up (not really) in a small town, you guys can probably relate to the way it was, bunch of young guys in town that would get together everyday after school and play football in somebody's yard, or one guy had a basketball goal, etc... but I had one buddy that had something cooler than all the rest. We were in the age range of 10-12 years old at the time, and we would stop at this particular buddy's grandparents house when we needed a break from riding bicycles all day long. I remember the first time we got to Willy and Alma's house and the garage door was open, and there sat the coolest damn car i ever had seen! A 1939 Chevy coupe with a straight axle, apple red with what I just found out today to be Fenton aluminum wheels on it. I asked my buddy about the old car and he told me that it was his dad's, but I knew that his dad had been killed in a car wreck. The car had been stored at his grandparents, still had flowers in it from his dad's funeral. From that day on we'd play in that car quite often. Then one day they pulled the car out and took it to his parents house, his mom had since remarried, and his step dad helped make this happen. The car was put in the garage at his mom's, but nobody knew the whereabouts of the keys, so the got a new ignition switch, and me and him, on superbowl Sunday, changed the switch, his step dad told us not to try starting the car until he came out to the garage at halftime lol. Nothing happened, and then life happened. There have been many times over the years that is sit and wonder what happened with the car, i moved away, and rarely seen any of my friends from those days. Recently me and my wife were at a car show, close to where I'm from, and as they were presenting trophies at the end of the day, they called my old friends name, and said 39 Chevy!!! I seen him walking up to get his trophy, and over to my right was the car that we sat in as kids!!! As he walked back with his trophy i was standing there smiling, he looked at me and said my name. I damn near started crying! He still had his dad's car, and had it back on the road, with the same engine, and that red paint that was sprayed in 1977!!! It was so awesome to see that car again! We talked about those days as kids, and he told me all he had done to the car, he pulled the straight axle out, but the sbc is just like it was when his dad drove the car, and the only paint work was on the running boards he installed, the car didn't have running boards when we were kids. I was in the area today and stopped by to see him. Took a couple of pictures of the car, and he sent me a couple of the way it was before. I can't explain the joy i got from seeing this car again. And he's doing it justice for his dad. Ladies and gentlemen, the Carter City Coupe. RIP Philip..... IMG_6006.jpg IMG_3548.jpg 20230830_183521.jpg 20230830_192408.jpg

Awesome story. Thanks for sharing. Not only did you get to see your old friend, you got to Honor his dad again.

  3. Good looking car, before and after. It's also a neat story how you reconnected to your old friend and how he held onto the car over all these years.

    Awesome story...

Cars and other old things are really a direct connection to a different time. I'm sure Lloyd when you saw that Chevy and you knew it was the car from your childhood, you were a kid again..even if just for a few minutes. On a similar note..recently I found a cookie jar at an antique store that I remember us having as a kid. I bought it, washed it up, and put it on the kitchen counter. When my 88 year old mom saw it...she said it was the early 70s again for a a brief instant.

Lloyd...next up after the Camino...Nose up 39 Chevy Coupe...;)...they make nice Hotrods...I remember one as a teen I saw and I can't get it out of my mind...someday...maybe me too...

I like 39 Chev anything...that must have been a timewarp experience...I wished he kept it straight axle and High stepping...but heck it's still around...

What a great story. Sorry your pal lost his dad so young. Boys need fathers, the step dad sounds like a good guy.

Yea, what everyone else said. Thanks for sharing that story. I can only imagine what it was like seeing your buddy and the car again after that long. Definitely would have been something to remember as a kid. I recently went back to the neighborhood that I grew up in up in Indiana. That brought back lots of memories as well one of which was the neighbor a couple houses down that had a Mach 1 that would lift the tires on launch. As a kid, I didn’t believe it until I saw it. Not sure how fast that car was, but it sure launched hard and left an impression on this hoodlum.

  27. Lloyd, thank you for sharing a wonderful story. It never fails to amaze me how a car or motorcycle can be a Time Machine and transport us back to a former time.

We were all young only once; but when somthing shows up that can bring the feelings we had into this day, it must be cherished.
Thank you Lloyd, for sharing this. What a gem
